Gladstone, MIWilliam Richard Helland Sr., age 85, of Gladstone, passed away early Saturday evening, August 17, 2013, at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette.
Bill was born October 21, 1927, in Manistique, the son of Arnold and Emma (Martinson) Lindquist. Bill was raised in Manistique until age fourteen, at which time, he and his family relocated to Hastings, Nebraska where Bill continued his education and graduated from the Hastings Schools. Following graduation, Bill enlisted in the United States Navy, serving as a medic, throughout the end of WWII and the Korean War, from 1945 until his honorable discharge in 1953. Bill was employed at Los Alamos National Laboratory, as an Engineer Technician, in Los Alamos, New Mexico. He returned to Gladstone in 1999, following his retirement. On October 20, 2000, Bill was united in marriage to the former Lucy Hurkmans, in Escanaba, and together the couple made their home in Gladstone. Bill was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Gladstone. He was a very talented woodworker and was proud to have made hundreds of detailed wooden toys throughout his life. Many of Bill
