Robert Roy Olson, age 74, of 510 1st Avenue South, Escanaba, MI passed away Saturday April 16, 2011 at his residence in Escanaba.
Robert was born October 19, 1936 in Escanaba the son of Roy and Ann (Sundling) Olson. He was raised Escanaba prior to serving his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Robert was honorably discharged in 1956 and he was awarded the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. He was united in marriage to Eiko in Japan and they returned to Gladstone where they raised their five sons.
Robert was employed with St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba for ten years. He went on to work at Harnischfeger Corporation for 18 years until its closure.
Robert attended The Salvation Army Temple in Escanaba. He was a member of the Teamsters and a former member of the Escanaba V.F.W. Robert enjoyed playing bingo and he was in charge of the Harbor Tower Bingo and he also called bingo at the Escanaba Eagles. He also enjoyed shooting pool, listening to country music, socializing and visiting with family and friends. Robert loved to travel and camp and some of his favorite places were Branson, MO, Pictured Rocks and camping at Pioneer Trail Park. Robert will also be remembered for helping others.
Survivors include his wife, the former Barbara Dart who he married on March 27, 2011 in Escanaba.
5 sons: Mike Olson of Gladstone, Tom (Cindy) Olson of Escanaba, Ken Olson of Tierra Amarillo, NM, David Olson of Gladstone and Chris Olson of Gladstone.
6 Step children: Terry, Tammy, Lori, Rebecca, Leonard, and Lynnea
Trevor, Tanner, Christina, Shawn, Kristy, Heather, Amanda, Brandon, Ashley, and Kyle.
In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by two sisters, Sally and Elaine.
