Richard “Gearbox” “UD” D. Gearhart, age 82 of Gladstone, passed away Monday, June 3, 2024 at Transitions Assisted Living in Gladstone.

 

Richard was born on November 15, 1941 in Nashville, MI, the son of John Gearhart and Jean (Roberts) Graham. He attended elementary and high school until 11th grade in Vermontville, MI and then moved to Nahma Junction where he graduated from Nahma High School Class of 1961.

 

Following high school, Richard enlisted into the United States Navy and proudly served from 1961 until 1987. He was stationed in the San Diego area for 17 years. He received many awards and honors while going on many cruises aboard numerous carriers. Richard was proud of his service in Vietnam. On August 31, 1987 he retired from Norfolk, VA Naval Station and then relocated to Gladstone.

 

Richard was a member of the Gladstone American Legion Post #71 and a life member of Escanaba VFW. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and working in his workshop. Richard spent time participating in Springer Spaniel field trials. He also was an avid Detroit Redwing fan.

 

Richard is survived by:

2 Nieces: Becky (Pat) Quinn and Jennifer (Gary) Kessinger

2 Great Nieces: Kaylea and Erin Quinn

Brother: David (Mary Lyn) Gearhart

Sister: Georgia Fox

In addition to his Parents Richard is preceded in death by:

Sister and Brother-in-law: Neola and David Gereau

Step Father: George Graham

Step Mother: Opal Gearhart

 

Graveside services will be Thursday, June 6, 2024 at Fernwood Cemetery in Gladstone at 1:00 PM. Military honors will be presented by the Gladstone American Legion #71 and committal prayers will be officiated by Rev. Fr. Brandon Yanni. The Skradski Family Funeral Homes of Delta County are assisting the Gearhart family.

    Richard was a great friend, we shared an interest in hunting, fishing and a love of springer spaaniels. My sincere sympathies to his family they are in my thoughts and prayers. I will miss him.
