Larry W. Johnson, 65, of Stonington passed away Saturday, September 19, 2009 at St. Francis Hospital where he had been a patient for almost a week after a courageous battle with cancer for over 9 years.
Larry was born October 31, 1943, in Escanaba, Michigan to Victor and Myrtle Johnson. He was raised in Stonington and graduated from Rapid River High School. He enlisted in the Army in 1964, and went to Fort Knox, KY for basic training. He was a Vietnam era veteran serving in Germany as a truck and tank mechanic during the war. While in the military Larry received a metal and accommodations for his rifle skills.

After the service Larry worked as a mechanic at Town and Country Motors in Escanaba until he was hired at the Escanaba Paper Mill. He worked in the number 4 paper machine system as the operator of the number 45 winder. He retired from the mill after more than 30 years in 2003. He was a member of the Mead Papermakers 25 year club.

Larry enjoyed NASCAR racing, collecting The Bradford Mint die cast model cars, gardening, going to camp, and spending time with family and friends.

    Dear family of Larry..Sorry I could not make it to the funeral…Thankful I had a nice visit in August with Larry as a number of us visited also with Aunt Doris in Escanaba…Good memories of Larry….God bless. Wayne

    Our sympathy goes to Larry’s family. We will miss Larry’s visits at our camp in Stonington. He was a co-worker as well. He was a very pleasant and kind person. He will be in our memories.

    Well another one of Gods Son’s returns to his side. My thought’s and Prayer’s go to the family. Larry was a kind ,helpful Man and friend. I am really sorry that I have”nt returned to the UP,and gotten a chance to see him before his passing. I remember lots fun times at the camp when we we’re young just hanging out. I’ll miss Larry RIP, May God watch over You.

    Even thou i am a cousin of Larry and should of been closer than i was, never really got to know him as I never got to get to stonington that much when i was a small Boy ..we seen each other from time to time when his parents and mine got together ,,,we lived in Fayette and always was happy to go there to Larry`s place in stoningtong on a sunday drive with my Dad [ Kenneth,Myrtle`s brother] what time we did have toge5ther will always be in my heart,,,,Take care Larry and relax ,,,you are in the hands of God and he will take care of you
