James Daniel Shandonay Sr., age 88, of Gladstone, passed away peacefully Thursday afternoon, August 29, 2013, at the Bishop Noa Home, in Escanaba.

Jim was born February 9, 1925, in Gladstone, the son of Joseph and Tillie (Freske) Shandonay. He was raised in Gladstone and was a 1943 graduate of the Gladstone High School. Jim was an exceptional athlete who excelled in football, basketball, track and skiing. Following high school, Jim enlisted in the United States Marine Corp., where he served during WWII, from 1943 to 1946. Throughout his enlistment, Jim received medals of accommodation which included, the Honorable Service Lapel Button, Good Conduct Medal, and the Good Conduct Bar. Upon his honorable discharge, Jim returned to Gladstone. On December 28, 1946, Jim was united in marriage to the former Sylvia Olson, at All Saints Catholic Church in Gladstone, and together the couple made their home and raised their family and spent their entire lives together, in Gladstone. Over the years, Jim was employed at the Soo Line Railroad where he worked from 1946 until his retirement in 1987. Sylvia preceded him in death in 1991.     I used to be a neighbor to the Shandonay’s, and Jim was always a great guy and he and Syl were so good to our kids. He loved his family and it always showed. Celebrate his life, and live like he did.

    my thoughts and prayers to mike and his family, I was raised in the neighborhood and knew your dad very well, always a very nice and kind guy, so sorry for your loss.

    Our condolences to the entire Shandonay family. Jim was a fellow Buckeye neighbor when I was growing up and I remember him as a kind man who loved to hunt and fish.I’m sure he will be sadly missed by all.

    Really enjoyed working with Jim, and my visits with him the last year while at Lakeview. My thoughts are with you , Shandonay family. Jim was a great guy.

    While I haven’t seen you or your brother Jim in many years, perhaps since high school, my condolences to your family on the loss of your father. I do try to keep track of events in Escanaba involving former friends and acquaint enhances. Sincerely,
