Jacob Steven Shope, age 18, passed away early Sunday morning, July 19, 2020, in Rapid River.
Please do not let our beautiful Jacob’s actions, at the end of his life, take away from who he really was.
There are not enough words to describe Jacob’s great qualities and character. He was brilliant, gentle, kind, caring, quick witted and humorous. He was a loving friend, brother, uncle, nephew, grandson, cousin and son.
Jacob’s life ended before it could even begin. He struggled with depression and substance abuse. Neither medical treatment, love, tough love nor family and friends could keep Jacob safe from his demons. Jacob is loved without end by all of his family and friends.
The Shope, Bricker, Nelson and Olson families are devastated and will grieve the loss of Jacob until being reunited again in Heaven.
Jacob’s family respectfully request that friends honor their privacy during this difficult time. Further details will be announced by the Skradski Family Funeral Homes of Delta County.

    To Jacob,
    I haven’t seen you since probably 4th grade but you were one of my best friends as a kid. I hope you knew, that even though I was just a seven year old kid, I was totally head over heels in love with you. Thank you for all the childhood memories and for filling up countless pages of my diary. I wish we could’ve reminisced about it ourselves together one day.

    Heartbreaking to hear the loss of such a kind and beautiful soul. My thoughts are with you all.

    I have no words. A person loses many loved ones in a lifetime, but to lose a child, not matter how old, is unimaginable. All I can say is that Jacob certainly is in a better place now, and is at peace. His demons can no longer hurt him. But to Steve and Sue, and the rest of his loving family and friends, I am so, so sorry. You and Jacob are all in my thoughts and prayers.

    Im so sorry for your loss. i just lost my only daughter do to depression and substance abuse. I hope that you find some peace. It is a helpless feeling to lose a child. I wish you my deepest condolences.

    I remember this one time in freshman history class, me and Jacob were in a group together for a presentation. Another student had copied our presentation word for word and went before us in hopes he wouldn’t get caught. Jacob, who was usually reserved in class, stood up for our hard work to make sure all the members of our group didn’t get robbed of our work. He was such a caring man with a good heart. He was always one to ask me if I wanted a snack or if I was okay. I’ll always remember a good friend. I’m sorry you were struggling, Jacob. I hope you’ve found your peace in Heaven.
