Stephen Robert Makosky, age 68, of Bark River, passed away unexpectedly Friday, May 3, 2019, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Steve was born in Escanaba on January 3, 1951 the son of Lawrence and Shirley “Billie Ann” (Perryman) Makosky. He was a 1969 graduate of Escanaba High School.

Following high school, Steve enlisted in the United States Army where he proudly served his country in Vietnam. While in service, Steve acquired medals of commendation including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device and the Army Commendation Medal. He was honorably discharged in February of 1972.

On September 9, 1972, Steve was united in marriage to the former Wanda Barcome at St. Anne Church in Escanaba. Steve and Wanda made their home, raised their family and spent many wonderful years together in Ford River (Hyde).

Steve enjoyed camping, four wheeling, bowling, going to the Off- Road Races and spending time with friends and family. In his younger years, Steve enjoyed coaching the Ford River Dragons Wrestling team and was instrumental in establishing the youth wrestling program at the Ford River Elementary School.

In addition to his loving wife Wanda, Steve is survived by:

Sharron Hughes
Grandchildren: Aidan, ShaiLee, Morgan, Olin, Mira, Mallory,
Colton and Blaine
Brothers: Mike (Sharon) Makosky, Joe Makosky,
Gerald (Mary Kay) Makosky, Mark (Stephanie) Makosky

Sister: Mary (Kevin) Julien
Father in law: Basil Barcome

He is further survived by his nieces, nephews, cousins and many good friends.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Billie Ann and his mother in law, Zella Barcome.

A memorial gathering to celebrate the life of Steve Makosky will begin on Thursday at 4:00PM at the Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Union Hall in Escanaba. Military rites will be conducted at 5:00PM on Thursday, at the Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Union Hall in Escanaba, with the Gladstone American Legion August Mattson Post #71 and U.S. Army Funeral Honor Guard presiding. Closing prayer services and table grace will follow with Pastor William Rafuse officiating. Food and refreshments will follow and visitation will resume until 8:00PM. Family has requested that all guests dress casually. The Skradski Family Funeral Homes of Delta Country are assisting with arrangements.

    Shannon and Sharron and family I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your father, husband, brother, Uncle and friend may god be with you at this difficult time.

    I could not believe you were gone when I heard the news. Even tho our lives went different directions, you will always be in my thoughts. We have a lot of memories growing up and some when we did grow up. Rest in peace Steve. You will be missed greatly.

    Steve was a fantastic neighbor. He was always willing to help others. He was a jack-of-all trades and was gifted mechanically. He was a hard worker and he was always on the go, even in the worst weather conditions. We shared many enjoyable times together and we will miss him. Our prayers are with Wanda and her entire family.

    Sorry for your loss Wanda & Family. Years ago, I delivered groceries to the Family Home. In my belief, he is in a great place and well looked after. He watches over all whom he loves. Carry on, for he is always with you.

    Growing up next door and with Shawn as my childhood best friend, I spent a lot of time in the Makosky house. I always remember Steve being a patient and caring man. From building the neighborhood kids a baseball field (complete with a backstop fence) to letting us turn his ice shack into a fort – he was always supportive of whatever shenanigans we were up to. Even if that meant spreading his tools out all over the yard. But no matter what, Steve could always put a smile on your face. Wanda, Shawn (and Jess), Shannon (and Dan), and Sharron – my thoughts and prayers are with you.

    Sending sympathy to the entire family. What a great guy. Sure will miss our chats at the off road races. Rest In Peace!

    My heart just breaks for you and your family Wanda! We have so many great memories with you guys! I can not even imagine the pain and heartache you are feeling, I only pray each day gets easier to understand why, and the pain lessens.

    Great sadness engulfs us all as there wasn’t anyone else quite like Steve. He would always make you laugh, help you out if he could and could fix or rig up anything. Hardest worker ever! We can’t be with you today to express our sympathies to you, Wanda, Sharon, Shannon and Sean but our thoughts are with you. Hugs to all of you. Mike and Sharon, too, as the Makosky boys were always helping each other out and having fun together. Steve will be greatly missed!

    My sincere condolences to the Makosky Family. Steve was a close friend and teammate on the Escanaba H.S. Wrestling team. He was a great guy and true competitor. Rest In Peace buddy!
