PamOur family had the pleasure to know Yoko for many years both at the church and in our home for many sushi parties. She was such a wonderful person and always a delight in the kitchen….my ability to make sushi rice PERFECT will live forever in her memory and we will always think of her when it is made.

To the family and friends of the woman that I came to know simply as Yoko: Back during the 1982-83 school year here in Escanaba, my wife, two daughters, and I became a Youth for Understanding host family for Masayoshi Iwahashi, a 15-yeaar-old lad from Wakayama, Japan. And from the very first day of his time spent with us, Yoko was intimately involved with our situation. Since we didn’t speak Japanese, Yoko was right at the airport to meet “Masa” when his airplane arrived at the Delta County Airport. And throughout that year, Yoko was like a grandma to us. She cooked for us and even traveled with us to Green Bay to buy Japanese foods at the Oriental Food Store on Broadway Avenue (along with Mrs. Bloomstrom). Many years later, she translated a legal document into Japanese for my wife’s employer, Frank Stupak the attorney, without asking for compensattion. I will always remember her as a very kind and thoughtful woman, and I will miss her very much.

Our condolences to Yoko’s family and friends. She was a graceful and amazing woman. I’ll never forget while we lived in Gladstone how she saved a piece of candy for my son Lukas every Sunday and took the time after the service to seek him out and give that special treat. It was a wonderful encouragement for him. In addition, she was an inspiration to me during a rough time in my life. My favorite quote was “Julie, you and I are like blades of grass. When someone steps on us, we bounce right back.” I have shared that quote with my students and I wanted to share this with you to know her ongoing legacy even after she has passed. With our sincere sympathy,

Pam and Gerry,Yoko was a delightful lady. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
