Wilma “Jeannie” DeBassige, age 77, of Escanaba passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 10, 2020 at home.
Jean was born May 29, 1943 in Escanaba, the daughter of Francis and Margaret (Feathers) Schwartz. She loved baking for her family and friends and won many baking competitions at the UP State Fair.
Jean is survived by her children, Vernon Nikunen of Lower Michigan, Gene (Wanda) DeBassige of Rock, Kris (Nick) Micheau of Gladstone, Barb (Doug) Bricker of Gladstone and Torey (Kenny) Smith of Escanaba; brother, Brian Schwartz of Escanaba; aunt, Iola Feathers of Rapid River, special cousin, Emily Mcgeary of Rapid River and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her son, Anthony “Joey” Nikunen, her granddaughter, Amber Winnie, her parents and her sister, Elaine LeClaire.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 15 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Skradski Family Funeral Home in Escanaba. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 PM with Pastor Tony Morrison officiating. Jean will be laid to rest in the Rapid River Cemetery.
The family would like extend a “Thank You” to UP Health System Hospice, especially Ann Truitt for their kind and compassionate care.
