Gladstone, MIVernon C. “Vern” Andrews, 83, formerly of Gladstone, passed away peacefully Thursday morning October 27, 2016, at Atrium Nursing Care Facility in Chilton, WI.
Vern was born April 29, 1933 in Leslie, MI the son of Merrill and Grace (Cannon) Andrews. He was raised in Leslie where he was a 1952 graduate of Leslie High School. Vern continued his education at Ashbury College in Kentucky. He went on to receive his B.A. and M.A. from Central Michigan University and his Ed.Sp. degree from Western Michigan University. He received other certifications from other colleges during his Psychologist career. He also served 2 years in the U.S. Army and also completed 6 years as a student pastor.

Vern worked for 33 years at the Delta Schoolcraft I.S.D. as the school psychologist. Following his retirement, he continued working part time at the Bay Pines Detention Center. In 1985 he received the Michigan School Psychologist of the Year Award. And he was the recipient of the Golden Apple. He was also a member of the American Psychologist Association and the Michigan Association of School Psychologist.

Vern was a Life Member of Kiwanis International, Lt. Gov. of his Dist. and former V.P. of Kiwanis District Foundation. He was the recipient of the Hixson Award. Vern also worked with Big Brothers and Big Sisters.

Vern was an active member of the Central United Methodist Church in Escanaba, MI., untill he transfered to the Zion United Methodist Church in Forest Junction, WI.. His hobbies included camping, spending time with family and grandchildren.

In addition to his wife Leora, who he was united in marriage to on September 5, 1954, survivors include:

8 Grandchildren: Ashley (Andy) Schild, Alyssa (Nate) Lupo, Corey Andrews, D.J. (Rachel) Dean, Jaime (Chelsey) Andrews, Caleb (Chet) Dean, Ian Dean and Lauren (Ray) Johnson.

In addition to his parents, 2 brothers, Lawrence and John preceded Vern in death.

Funeral services celebrating the life of Vernon C. Andrews were held on Saturday October 29, 2016 at Zion United Methodist Church in Forest Junction, WI at 4:00 pm with Pastor Rick Andrus, presiding. Burial will be in the Gardens of Rest Cemetery in Wells. The Skradski Family Funeral Homes of Gladstone and Escanaba are assisting the Andrews family. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Kiwanis Scholarship Fund at Bay College

    I worked with Vern at DSISD. Vern was nice to work and was respected by everyone . He was always willing to help students and Staff.I am saddened to hear of your loss and he will be missed. I will keep your family in prayer.

    Mrs. AndrewsI worked with Vern during my years as a Special Education teacher in Gladstone. He was such a gentle soul and a very good friend. Vern also worked with my husband, Dennis, at the
    ISD. He found Vern to be an excellent employee, who had the welfare of children as his top priority. He was an honest and trustworthy person, who was a joy to have on staff.

    I got to know Vern through the Escanaba Noon Kiwanis Club. He was so kind and thoughtful and I will always remember his heart for service. He was a bright light in this world and will be missed by many.

    I worked at the ISD with Vern and typed many of his psychological reports. He was such a sweet, kind-hearted man who cared deeply about the kids that he worked with in special education. Always very professional. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family.
