Vernis J. Hardwick, age 87, of 9284 Highway M-35; Gladstone, died Saturday evening, February 19th, 2005 at home surrounded by loving family members. She was born December 23, 1917 in Naubinway, the daughter of Ruel and Ellen (Moore) Newberry and was raised in Luce County. She married Wellington Sanford and together had lived in the Detroit area for a period of time. They relocated to the St. Jacques area in 1947. Vernis married Melvin F. Hardwick May 4th, 1953 and he survives. They both have lived at their present location since October, 2004.
She was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church of Rapid River and the Rapid River American Legion Auxiliary August Mattson Post #301. Vernis enjoyed quilting, cooking, and traveling but her greatest enjoyment was her family.
