Robert J. Buckland

Resided in Gladstone, MI
Died November 1, 2020

Robert J. “Buck” Buckland, age 93, of Gladstone, passed away peacefully from Covid 19 at his home Sunday, November 1, 2020 surrounded by his loving family.

Buck was born March 13, 1927, in Escanaba, MI, the son of Severin and Leona (Creten) Buckland. He attended St. Joseph High School and he was a member of All Saints Church. Buck enlisted in the Merchant Marines after high school and proudly served his country during World War II. When WWII ended, Buck continued sailing on the Great Lakes. He left sailing behind to start his career at the Chicago Northwestern Railroad and continued working there for 42 years. He married the love of his life, Lois Soderman, on January 22, 1949. Together they made their home in Gladstone and raised six children.

During his life, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, camping, cooking and baking, but his best times were spent with his wife, his family and good friends.

One of his proudest moments was making a hole in one while golfing with his golf buddies. After retirement, Buck and Lois traveled the country, but Biloxi, Mississippi was their second winter home. Buck will be missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his loving wife of 71 years, Lois, Buck is survived by:
2 Sons: David Buckland
Robert (Linda) Buckland Jr.
4 Daughters: Anne (Mark) Brower
Cathy (Steve) Hlivka Vicki (Dave) Rattray Beth Wisner
Sister: Bernadette Verhamme
Grandchildren: Kara, Steve, Rachael, Jenny, John, Lisa, Nick, Sean, Michael, Katie, Erik, Andrea, Mollie, Sammi, Alex, Ryan and Jack.

Papa Buck never stopped worrying about his grandkids. Even while he was sick, he was asking about all of the grandkids and making sure they were all doing well.

Great Grandchildren: Buck and Lois have 29+ great grandchildren. Grandpa always said about his great grandchildren, “They are all so beautiful.” The little ones brought him so much joy, and they loved their Papa Buck.
In addition to his Parents, Buck was preceded in death by his brother, Russell, his sister Arlene, and brother in laws, Gene Verhamme and Mike Rudden.
A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
The Skradski Family Funeral Homes of Delta County are assisting the Buckland family.
