Richard J. Mattson, age 90, of Escanaba passed away at home on Tuesday, October 20, 2020.
Richard was born November 7, 1929 in Escanaba, the son of Arthur and Esther (Beck) Mattson. He was raised in Escanaba and graduated from the Escanaba High School in 1948. Richard served his country proudly in the United States Army from 1951-1953. He served with the 73rd Tank Battalion and was a Korean War Veteran. He was united in marriage to Rosemary Krokstad at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Escanaba on July 31, 1965. He was a member of the United Evangelical Covenant Church in Gladstone and worked at the Mead Paper Corporation for over 26 years, retiring in 1992. Richard was an avid Detroit Lions and Red Wings fan, a history buff and enjoyed deer and turkey hunting.
Richard is survived by his wife, Rosemary of Escanaba; his children, Tom Mattson of Hart, MI and Mary Mattson of St. Paul, MN; daughter-in-law, Michelle Mattson of Lansing, MI; grandchildren, Lars and Linnea Mattson; sister, Elaine (David) Erickson of Escanaba and numerous nieces an nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, John and Harold and sister, Lois Mattson.
The family will receive friends on Monday, October 26 from 12:30 PM to 1:45PM at the United Evangelical Covenant Church in Gladstone. Military Honors will be presented at 1:45 PM by the Gladstone American Legion Post 71. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 PM with Pastor Aaron Anderson officiating. Richard will be laid to rest in the Gardens of Rest Cemetery.
Masks and social distancing are required upon entering the church and will be appreciated by the family.
