Rachel M.Groos, 94, of 2900 3rd Ave. South Escanaba died on Friday January 7, 2005 at the Bishop Noa Home where she had been residing since 1998.
She was born November 1,1910 in Escanaba, the daughter of Aguila and Delia (Chartre) Godin and was a 1927 Graduate of the Escanaba High School. Rachel was married to Clinton Groos May 8,1934, he preceded her in death in April 1982, She had been a musician all her life and played the piano and sang for the nursing homes in this area. She had also played and entertained at the former Shakeys Pizza Parlor for 13 years and had been the church organist for St. Anthony

Your mother bacame special to me at Bishop Noa. My mother moved there in 2000 and we became acquainted with Rachel at the first outdoor picnic we attended. She was familiar with our store near the Webster School, and we talked about Escanaba history. Later, I found out she played at Shakeys, which I remembered, and she and mom would talk and I’d push mom into the St Pats room to listen to her play the piano. Mom gave her a small stuffed animal one Christmas. Mom passed away last August (Edith Henke) and I haven’t been back to Bishop, so missed seeing your mom lately. She was so friendly to us, and I’m glad I got to know her for a least a few years.

Rachel was my grandma, she was always a supporter of what I did and pushed me to greater. I will always remember her for that. She wanted nothing more then well being for everyone, never judging, she always believed in people and the good in them. She was a woman to respect and remember and cherish in our hearts forever.

My Aunt Rachel was one of the liveliest people I have ever met. She was a joy to be around. No one could play a ragtime tune like her. She spent hours telling me about the Groos family and her memories of “Papa” (Jacob Groos)and the whole Groos clan. No matter where in the world I was stationed, a trip back to Escanaba to see her was always the highlight of my visit. I will think of her often and remember her at the piano.

I had the pleasure of taking care of your Mother & Grandmother as a Nurse’s Aide & Nurse. We all will miss her playing the piano every afternoon in the Sister Pat’s Room. I would listen while passing my afternoon’s meds on Station III. God’s Blessings!!!!!
