One of my fondest memories of Uncle Ned was at his gas station. He would give us a soda out of the pop machine without putting any money in. We lived over seas and didn’t get home to visit very often but Uncle Ned always made us feel special, like family. My heart goes out to my anut Eva and all my cousins.

My family came home from overseas every three years to visit Escanada and Gladstone. Uncle Ned always welcomed us three kids (who tended to feel a little foreign) with such warmth and enthusiasm. I remember Ned taking us to the salt lick in the woods near the cabin. Going there and hiding in the bushes, waiting for the deer with Ned – was more exciting than the deer themselves. I also stayed with Eva, Ned and Neva a couple weeks one or more summers. I remember Neva sliding down the laundry shoot, the short Christmas tree plot, and walking/riding on the roads at dusk in Rapid River. Eva and Ned treated me like their own. What a zest for life Uncle Ned had – and he shared it with all of us, so generously. When I brought Richard to the UP when we were first married – Uncle Ned once more made a family member feel special. We will keep him in our prayers – and I’m sure God will love Uncle Ned’s company.

I just read about your dear Ned–a sweetheart from my childhood days! I send you and yours a hug wrapped in wonderful memories of Ned. I am so glad he and all of you were a part of my childhood’s happy days and more! My folks, Lawrence & Cleo Wils, and my family, enjoyed many days with the Short family, too! We have a long and wonderful history! Thank you for those gifts!

When I was a boy, we kids were always treated with respect at Ned’s gas station. Ned was a rarity in today’s world – a genuine “prince” of a guy. He and Eva are the type of people who have made Rapid River a great place to call “home.” Our deepest condolences go out to Eva and the rest of the Short family.

I just heard about Ned’s passing Thursday night and unfortunately cannot be present for the celebration of Ned’s life. He was a giant personality who influenced my life in many ways. I will always treasure the many memories I have of him. It doesn’t seem possible that a vital bundle of energy could be quieted. I feel blessed to have been his friend.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to the Short Family. Ned was a wonderful man and the best neighbor anyone could ever ask for. We are thankful for the 3 years we had living next door to him and Eva. He was always there to lend a hand, gave us every detail about our house, and most of all share a wonderful story. He made our kids smile, always remembering them while away for the winter. He will always have a very special place in our heart and he will never be forgotten.
