Melvin Francis Hardwick, age 83, of Bark River passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at the home of his son, Darrel.

Melvin was born June 5, 1928 in St. Jacques, the son of Dave and Ellen (Ossawanimakee) Hardwick He was a graduate of the Nahma High School. Melvin served his country proudly in both the United States Army and later the Air Force and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was united in marriage to Vernis Newberry on May 4 in 1953. He was a truck driver for over 49 years, was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Rapid River and a past member of the Rapid River American Legion Post 301. He enjoyed playing country music and would often be seen and heard playing the guitar, mandolin and fiddle in the band Yesterdays Country and numerous other bands throughout the years. He also enjoyed hunting, had a good sense of humor, was a kind hearted man and loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Melvin is survived by two sons, Darrel (Margaret) Hardwick of Bark River, MI and Dennis (Crystal) Hardwick of New Orleans, LA; three step-sons, Gary (Char) Sanford of Bark River, MI, Aaron (Donna) Sanford of Stephenson, MI and Melvin (Dee) Sanford of St. Jacques, MI; his daughter, Connie (Lynedell) Fitch of Ford River, MI; step-daughter, Bonnie Sanford of Escanaba, MI; 21 grandchildren, several great grandchildren; his sister, Louise Amato of Anaheim, CA and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vernis on February 19, 2005, his parents, four brothers, Willy, Wolfred, Clifford and Archie and two sisters, Ida Stine and Emma Hardwick.
