Mabel Breitenbach, age 100, of Escanaba, passed away Friday evening, October 12, 2012 at the Christian Park Village in Escanaba.
Mabel was born August 9, 1912 in Cornell, Michigan, the daughter of William and Lillian (Miron) Gardner. She was united in marriage to Frederick “Fritz” Breitenbach in 1933. Fred and Mabel owned and operated the Breitenbach Grocery in Northtown Escanaba for many years. She also worked at Central Supply at the St. Francis Hospital. Mabel was a charter member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Escanaba, the Escanaba Eagles Club, the VFW Auxillary and the Lady Elks Auxillary. She enjoyed spending time with her family, golfing and bowling.
Mabel is survived by three sons, William (Ann) of Escanaba, Richard (Antoinette) of Inverness, FL, John (Sandra) of Bark River; two daughters, Carolyn (Michael) Needham of Bark River and Mary (Robert) Anderson of Bark River; 14 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren; sister, Lorraine DeMars of Escanaba; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Secosh of Dousman, WI and Jane Gardner of Escanaba; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick in 2002, her parents, an infant brother, Raymond, brother, Lester and two sisters, Sister Cordell Gardner and Irene Meyers.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 17 from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at the Skradski Family Funeral Home in Escanaba. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12:00 PM at the St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Escanaba. A luncheon will be served immediately following services in the fellowship hall. Mabel will be laid to rest in the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery.

My condolences on Mabel’s passing. I knew Mabel & Fritz for several years living next to them in the trailer court. My family & I always made a point to visit them when we were home visiting my parents, Don & Sandy Preaseau. They always made our visit a joyous and memorable time. God Bless

I am so sad to hear of Mabel Passing. I remember sitting next to Mabel and Fritz at the Elks Lodge in Escanaba. We had some great times and I still miss the stories that Fritz would tell and Mabel would give him a push and straighten out the story. What a great couple. God bless and take care knowing that they are a couple again.

While I do not know Mrs. Breitenbach personally, I kow her son (William) due to the volunteering and am sure she will be greatly missed by all of her family, friends, and loved ones. I wish to offer my condolences and will certainly keep the family in my prayers.
