Lorraine Ellen Novak, 71, of Rapid River passed away at home surrounded by her family on Saturday, January 21, 2023.
Lorraine was born June 7, 1951 in Escanaba, the daughter of George and Gladys (Leadman) Jacobson. She graduated as the Class Salutatorian from the Rapid River High School in 1969. She was united in marriage to Tom Novak on August 26, 1972 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Lorraine worked for American Cable Vision, Century 21 Realty and the State of Michigan, retiring in 2006. She was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Rapid River where she played the piano and organ for many years. She began playing organ for the Trinity Lutheran Church in Stonington when she was in high school and later for Christ the King Lutheran Church in Escanaba. She enjoyed fiber arts such as sewing, quilting, and embroidery, as well as gardening, canning and being a grandma (Nana). She and her husband had beautiful flower gardens at their home in their younger years. After her retirement she joined a quilting group in Gladstone and greatly enjoyed the new friendships she made within that group. Her family is also very grateful for the joy that the quilting group brought to her life.
She was decisive without being bossy, enjoyed fine things yet was practical, and was a very generous person. She would spend time selecting the perfect card or gift for someone, and there was always a reason behind what she chose. She also loved animals, particularly cats, and surprised her husband more than once by bringing home a new kitten for the family. She will be truly missed by her friends and family.
Lorraine is survived by her husband of 50 years, Tom Novak of Rapid River, her daughters, Tricia (Mark) Magreta of Escanaba and Johanna Novak of Marquette, grandsons, Jacob and Gabe Magreta, brother, Roland Jacobson of Escanaba, brother-in-law, Dennis Froberg of Rapid River, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Marcella Froberg and sister-in-law, Sandy Jacobson.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 27 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Memorial services will follow at 5:00 PM.
The family would like to thank the team at OSF Home Health & Hospice for the wonderful care that they provided to Lorraine (and the whole family) during the last weeks of her life. The end of life is never easy but their professionalism and compassion certainly helped and will never be forgotten.

Lorraine left her beautiful mark on the world and in the hearts of many. I have many memories of her: as a classmate, as a roommate, as a workmate, as my maid-of-honor, and then when our babies came along, we were busy in our separate lives, going in our own directions, so vastly different. We reconnected at the 25th class reunion and it was so much fun getting caught up, revealing that we each had natural curly hair — her mom would iron hers and I would wrap mine around my head or cut it off (days of no such thing as blow dryers). I do wish we had remained in touch more, other than the occasional swap of birthday cards, having been born 2 days apart. However, we were involved wholeheartedly in our own circles. I am so sorry for your personal loss of such a beautiful person.

Our hearts are deeply saddened by the passing of Lorraine. It has been such a difficult time for your family, and I hope God’s peace and comfort can carry you through this loss. I have so many memories of Lorraine and Marcella as I grew up! Auntie Gladys also who took me under her wing through my rebellious years and Lorraine and Marcella who stood by me!
Lorraine was an amazing compassionate person and I know you all will cherish all the precious memories! The sisters are together again along with the whole crew that have passed before.
