Laura ‘Jean’ Lancour

Resided in Flat Rock, MI
Died March 1, 2021

Laura “Jean” Lancour, age 85, of Flat Rock, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 1, 2021 at U.P. Health Systems of Marquette under Hospice care.

Jean was born in Escanaba on November 26, 1935, the daughter of Herbert and Laura (Foster) Hoes. They moved around a lot so she is known by Laura in some of the areas but preferred to be called “Jean.”
Jean’s family lived in Perkins, Schaffer and Wells. She always talked about how she wasn’t allowed to go to the top of the hill to play, so her brother (Wesley) would go and drag her back down the hill by her long braids.

After being united in marriage to Harry Lancour, she worked at the Flat Rock School in the kitchen under the head cook of Mary Jane Peltier, when food was homemade. She was referred to as the lunch lady by many and always a kind word.

Jean was involved in many activities: Holy Family Church Altar Society, helping with funeral luncheons, mardi gras, etc. She took charge of the Flat Rock Senior Citizens card players. She also loved playing cards at the Gladstone Senior Center, having lunch-always looking for a good sweet and participating in their activities. She loved to spend the summers at Gladstone Campground with her cousins Joyce, Leonard, Bill, Judy, Nancy. The campground is where the 4th of July became a family affair for many years.

Jean would jump in her car at a moment’s notice, driving off to Amy’s in North Dakota, Florida, Oklahoma and to her cousins in Green Bay. When ill health started taking over she spent 9 months at Northwoods where she had a lease on life once again. She enjoyed her grandkids and was a very active role in raising them. She has been fortunate to be part of great grandkids great-great grandkids also until covid restrictions.

Jean had a big heart and accepted her extended families where they were always welcomed. She will be missed by all who knew her spunk, quilting on the bluff and going to retreats, bus trips, love of recipe sharing and card playing partners. She was always there for her nieces, nephews and all their extended families.

Jean is survived by:
Daughter: Cheryl (Tom Kozar) Smith of Cornell,MI
Son: Clyde (Patti) Lancour of Flat Rock, MI
Sister: Gail (Wayne) Johnson of Gladstone, MI
2 Grandchildren
6 Step Children & their families 8 Great Grandchildren, 3 Great great grandchildren
And several special Nieces and Nephews.

In addition to her Parents, Jean was preceded in death by:
Husband: Harry Lancour,
Brother: Wesley Hoes
Sister: Kay Edington
Granddaughter: Danielle Thompson
Son-in-law: Mike Thompson
And Step Father Fred Marenger.

Family will receive friends on Friday, March 5, 2021 from 10:00 AM until Noon at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Mass of Christian burial is scheduled for 1:00 PM at Holy Family Catholic Church in Flat Rock. Jean will be laid to rest in the Gardens of Rest Cemetery in Wells. The family would appreciate being respectful of Covid-19 restrictions and guidelines. The Skradski Family Funeral Homes of Delta County are assisting the Lancour family.

Jean we have been friends since 1973. What a hoot. So glad we went on the bus a few, years ago to Marquette.s b;lueberry fest. So many good times. Birthday club, parties at the Birch, and recently Senior Citizens. Rest in peace and try to stay out of trouble.

I will cherish the many gifts she made for me including a tree skirt witha matching runner for our coffee table. She was one of my first hair customers going back to 1962. I enjoyed her visits. She was a very special Aunt.

God speed Aunt Jean, you were always special to us as we grew up, many memorize at the farm. You took my Mom on trips that she could have never done. God bless you, love always. Will miss you.

My sincere condolences to Jean’s family. She & Harry were a great couple & now they are reunited.
I have many fond memories of them when I attended Flat Rock Elementary!
    Rest in peace Jean.

    Sincerely,
    Cheryl (Kalishek)

Jeannie, we will miss your “straight talk” and sweet tooth! You and your family were a big part of our growing up years! I remember being on the same party line for years!! Mary Lynn Gareau Larson

Like others have mentioned, Jean was just plain fun! If she was “late” to a quilting retreat, she was just coming from playing darts at a bar or had to stop at a funeral for her lunch! We called her “Mean Jean” because there wasn’t a mean bone in her body. Truly a joy to have known Jean.

    Cheryl, Clyde and family.
Oh, the memories of Jean visiting our house when I was growing up. Also – seeing her every day punching my card in the lunch line – always having a comment for my Mom.
She was larger than life .. what a unique character.
    Condolences! Janice (Gareau) Adams
