Gladstone, MI

Kathy Howard, age 82, of Gladstone, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, December 14, 2024 at Christian Park Village in Escanaba.

Kathy was born March 17, 1942 in Flint, Michigan, the daughter of Marshall “Cobb” and Helen (Hoverman) Standerfer. She attended and graduated from Mount Morris High School. To know her was to know laughter, love, and a spirit that could light up any room. Larger than life and undeniable life of the party, Kathy brought joy and energy wherever she went.

She was united in marriage to Max Howard, Jr, spending over 40 years together.

Kathy spent over 50 years employed as a school bus driver, most of those being with Gladstone Area Schools. Her infectious laughter, quick wit, and generous heart made her unforgettable to all who crossed her path. Whether hosting family gatherings, singing along with her favorite songs, or sharing stories that grew more colorful with every telling, Kathy had a way of turning ordinary moments into extraordinary memories.

Kathy loved her family and many friends near and far, and would spend many summers at the family cabin up in Canada. She taught us to live fully, laugh often, and love without reservation. She enjoyed quilting, basketmaking, reading, traveling, a good game of cards as well as a good drink.

Kathy is survived by: daughter Mary (Gary) Oakley of Harrison, MI and son Bruce (Cheryl) Dykes of Gladstone, MI. Plus step-children Sherri, Brenda and Jerry. Brothers Mike (Nancy) Standerfer and Dave (Audrey) Standerfer. Grandchildren: Kali (Matt) Henry and Bryce Dykes, plus Amber, Ashley and Andrew.

In addition to her parents and husband; Kathy is preceded in death by her brother, Phil and one of many cherished dogs, Pal.

Though our hearts ache at her absence, we celebrate the vibrant, unforgettable life she led. Her laughter will echo in our memories, her light will guide us in dark times, and her spirit will live on in every story told and every toast raised in her honor.

A celebration of Kathy’s life will be held on March 22, 2025 in Gladstone. In her honor, let us gather not in sorrow, but in joy — just as she would have wanted — to share laughter, love, and stories that remind us of the extraordinary mom, sister, grandmother, and friend that she was.

Rest easy Kathy. Your legacy will live on, and the party in heaven just got a little louder.

A privilege and great pleasure to have known Kathy, I’ve travelled the world and seen many things, but it is the people I’ve met who have enriched my life and Kathy certainly enriched my life and that of my wife and boys especially Sam who went to visit Kathy. Gone, but will never be forgotten, she lit up our lives and wherever she’s gone her light will shine forever. Love you Kathy.
