Joseph Micks

Resided in Rapid River, MI
Died July 8, 2006

Army Cpl. Joseph P. Micks, age 22, of Rapid River, died Saturday July 8, 2006 as a result of injuries sustained in combat operations while faithfully serving in Iraq.
Joe was born October 18, 1983, in Tacoma, WA, the son of Kenneth and Amy (Brunette) Micks. Joe was a 2002 Rapid River High School graduate and was dually enrolled at the Bay de Noc Community College during his senior year at Rapid River. Joe went on to attend Baker College in Owasso, MI before enlisting in the United States Army National Guard. Joe eventually became a full active duty soldier and was stationed in Germany with the United States Army Engineering Battalion. Shortly before his deployment to Iraq, in November of 2005, Joe married the former Ramona Mindt, in Germany where Ramona currently resides. Joe is remembered as being a very intelligent, generous, kind- hearted young man who had a strong willingness to help others. He achieved high academic honors in high school, tutored fellow students and was a member and alter server at the St. Charles Church in Rapid River. Joe was a member of the local Boy Scouts organization where he gained high honors as an Eagle Scout. He enjoyed playing golf, playing and managing basketball and collecting baseball cards and sports memorabilia. Joe will be deeply missed by family and friends and always remembered for his selfless sacrifices made to his country.

In addition to his loving wife Ramona, Joe is survived by his parents, Kenneth and Amy Micks of Rapid River:

1 Brother: Andrew

My heart goes out to the Mick’s family. I am also stationed at Bamberg, Germany where Joseph Mick was stationed. My husband, SFC Christopher Nichols (former resident of Escanaba, Michigan), is also deployed to Iraq at this time. If there is anything that I can do for you, please do not hesitate to ask me. Your son has done the ultimate sacrifice that allows people the freedom many take for granted. His duty and respect to the United States will always be remembered. May peace be with you.

I recently visited New York City. On Sunday, July 16 I attended Marble Collegiate Church with a group of people I was traveling with. During the service one of the pastors announced the names of those who had died in the war during the past week. At the end of the service anyone was invited to tie a ribbon with the name of one of those soldiers on it on the fence surrounding the church. As a visitor to the church, I chose to do this. The name on my ribbon was Joseph P. Micks. It was sad to see the fence filled with so many ribbons, knowing what they all meant. Thank you Spc. Micks for your service to our country.

Dear Ken, Amy, Andy and Ramona,

I met Joe (and Andy) at Camp Hiawatha when we all served on staff there. Joe served under me on the waterfront staff for a time, and I was always struck by Joe’s rugged determination to set his own goals and to accomplish those goals in his own way.

Joe was a staff member that I could always count on in an emergency situation. No matter what else was going on around camp or on the waterfront, when the siren started to wail, steady Joe was there.

Joe’s loss lessens all of us. He will never be forgotten.

May God bless all of you.

I did not have the pleasure of meeting Joe. He sounds like a great young man. What he did for our country is the greatest sacrifice you can make. Like I said I did not know Joe or his family, but I have heard more great things about him since his passing. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. God has taken him in His hands and will comfort him forever. God Bless, and Thank You Joe.

Joe and I graduated together in the same year (’02). We attended a very small school, so, of course, everybody knows everybody. Joe was one of a kind, and I think all of our other classmates would agree. He was a very quick witted individual, that knew how to get a reaction out of people (in a good way). Everybody knew Joe. And whether you liked him or not, he could always make you laugh. The world will not be as a happy of a place without him.

It is hard to beleive this is real. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

    You WILL be missed, Joe.

Joe, we’re all going to miss you…I was waiting for the day for you to be done and come home with a wife and kids, having seen the world. Now, I know you are with God, and that we’ll meet again one day, but we’re all going to miss you terribly until then. Dear Family,

This may seem like such a wrong time to express my grief to you about your loss but I want to tell you that I am proud of him. I just moved away from Gladstone a year and a half ago. If I was there today, I would be there to express our thanks to the family of this great Man. The world is now very dangerous and our way of life only exists because of Men like this one. I salute him and honor him. I’m very sorry for your loss and I will carry some of this with me. I will honor him every Veterans Day.

I met Joe at Clear Lake Camp in middle school. We kept in touch for awhile after camp. We talked at track meets and he always had a smiling face. Even though we did not stay in conact through our high school years, I would hear things from friends who know I know him. It was always nice to hear how he was doing. I was sadden as I drove through Rapid River and my mother told me of Joe. My prayers are with his family and friends. God be with you, as he is with God.

    To The Micks Family,

I can not begin to express how saddened I am by your loss. Being in a military family myself I can understand what you are going through, but at the same time I have no idea. My husband and father have both spent a year in Iraq. My husband will be going back for his second tour this fall. He is from Escanaba and I am from Manistique so when a tragedy happens in the small areas that we live in it really hits you hard. Joe sounds like he was a wonderful man and a dedicated soldier. His sacrifice will not go unrecognized.

    The Final Role Call

We thought of you with love today
    But that is nothing new.
    We thought about you yesterday
    And days before that too.

We think of you in silence
    We often speak your name.
Now all we have are memories
And your picture in a frame.

    Your memory is our keepsake
    With which we’ll never part
God has you in His keeping
We have you in our Heart.

    Dearest Ken, Amy and Andy,

Still can’t believe that Joe is gone, and can’t even begin to imagine the heart-breaking grief you’re going through. There’s absolutely nothing worse than losing your child. Joe had such a crazy sense of humor and unbelievable self-confidence. I can still see him and that big smile/smirk of his–it makes me smile to think of it! Although it may not help right now, Joe’s in heaven and you will see him again. “It’s not how much you loved, but how much you’re loved by those you left behind.”

    Dear Micks Family,

On behalf of St. Charles Borromeo parish, I wish to extend to you grieving family, our assurances of prayer and support. Joe made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of our country, in the service of peace, his very own precious, young life.

While we are all aware that death is a part of life, we are never ready for it, we always want a little bit more, we want little more time. A death of someone like Joe is a painful reminder of brevity of life, nonetheless God’s infinite mercy given to us, in order that we show compassion and mercy to the grieving family. You are in our prayers, Joe we commend you to the Mercy of God. Rest in the Peace of Christ.

    Dear Ken, Amy, and Andy,

It is with great sadness and regret that I write to express sympathy to you from myself and from the Scouts and leaders of the Hiawathaland Council. My personal memories of Joe are of his cheerfulness, friendliness, and willingness to help. I know from his time on camp staff at Camp Hiawatha, he could get into mischief, but he learned from his mistakes and made things right.

I remember being at Joe’s Eagle Court of Honor. Part of the ceremony was the Eagle Scout Charge, which included,

“I charge you to be among those who dedicate their skills and ability to the common good. Build America on the solid foundations of clean living, honest work, unselfish citizenship and reverence for God and, whatever others say or may do, you leave behind you a record of which every Scout may be justly proud.”

In his brief years, Joe fulfilled that charge completely and leaves a stellar record. An Eagle has fallen, but his spirit soars. His memory will live and he will be an inspiration to generations of Scouts at Camp Hiawatha.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of grief which we share.

    Sincerely,

I remember Joe as a bright, energetic young man who was dual enrolled in my Computer Tech courses at Bay College while attending Rapid River HS. He challenged me like no other student, asking me for information about the world I did not have. It was during this time he told me that “he wanted to go to Europe and he wanted to see the world.”
