Janice R. Champeau, age 60, of Escanaba, passed away on Friday, October 16, 2020 at her home.

Janice was born April 2, 1960, in Manistique, the daughter of Frederick “Buck” and Mary (Mathison) Prater. She grew up in Manistique and graduated from the Manistique High School. She went on to college on scholarship at Albion college, studying English. Janice met her life companion, Kenneth Champeau, in her early twenties and together they shared many years of wonderful memories.

Janice worked as a legal secretary for 26 years of her life, and most recently worked for the Economopoulos law firm. She loved her work in the legal field, and especially loved helping people. She also enjoyed gardening, baking, reading, and staying up on current events. She will be dearly missed by so many.

Janice is survived by her life companion Kenneth, mother Mary Prater, daughters Kathleen (Jim St. John) Champeau and Merilee (Chris) Lund, brothers Kerry Prater and Joel Prater, sister Mary Buttry, grandchildren Hannah Lund, Madisyn Champeau, Alex St. John, and Abby St. John, and nieces and nephews Robby Buttry, Doug Buttry, Alissa Hurley, and Rachelle Stark.

Janice is preceded in death by her father Frederick “Buck” Prater, and brother James Prater.

The Champeau Family will receive friends in October 29th, 2020 from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at the Manistique First United Methodists Church. Funeral services will follow at 11:30 AM with Pastor BJ officiating.

    So sorry to hear of Jan’s passing. I talked with her frequently when I worked at the court and Jan was working for Mr. Economopoulos. I always enjoyed working with her. RIP Jan and Gods blessings to all of your family.
