Harriet Ihlenfeldt

Harriet Emily Ihlenfeldt, age 100, of Escanaba, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 31, 2025 at Christian Park Healthcare Center in Escanaba.

Harriet was born on June 7, 1925, the daughter of Charles and Daisy (Bengry) Alvord. Harriet grew up in Marquette and graduated from Graveraet High School. She later graduated from Northern Michigan University and continued on at the University of Michigan earning her Masters Degree in library science.

Harriet relocated to Escanaba in 1948 and was employed at the U.P. branch of the Michigan State Library. She started as a part time employee in 1961, became full time in 1966, and was reference librarian in 1968. In 1981, she became the director and retired from that position in 1987.

Harriet was on the board of Friends of the Escanaba Public Library, member of the Delta County Historical Society, Bay Sages, S.E.R.A., as well as the Highland Golf Club.

Harriet is survived by her son Brian (Elyse) Ihlenfeldt; granddaughters Kristina (Jon) Hsieh and Melissa (Jon) Harle; daughter-in-law Karen Ihlenfeldt; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Harriet was preceded in death by her parents; son Robert Ihlenfeldt; best friend and companion Casper Bartley; brothers Charles, Herbert and Ernest Alvord; and sisters Marjorie Sayen and Marilyn Ford.

 

In accordance with Harriet’s wishes, there will be no funeral services held

    Harriet will always have a special place in my heart. Aside from working together for many years at the library, we became close friends. After she retired it became our tradition to get together during the holidays to catch up, which usually included a few cocktails! Rest in peace my dear friend.
