Harold A. Karnitz, 86, of Gladstone, passed away Friday July 20, 2018 at the Saint Francis Hospital in Escanaba following a lengthy illness.
Harold was born November 3, 1931 in Gladstone the son of Harvey and Ellen (Lilquist) Karnitz. Following graduation in 1949 from Gladstone High School, Harold served his country in the U.S. Army. Harold was a Michigan State Trooper for many years serving in many locations including the Lower and Upper Peninsula. He had served as District Commander and retired as a 1st Lieutenant Inspector.
Harold was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Wells. He loved golfing and spending time with his family. He also enjoyed spending over 30 years wintering in Florida.
In addition to his wife of 66 years, the former Jacquelyn (Erickson) who he was united in marriage to on May 7, 1953, survivors include:
Sister: Beryl Mauritz of West Bend, WI
Sisters-in-law: Elaine Poma of Stonington and Michelle (Terry) Powers
Beloved nephew, Keith (Kitty) Picord of Escanaba and many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
In addition to his parents, his brothers, Marvin, Milton, Melvin Karnitz, Brothers-in-law, Elvin Mauritz, Russ Poma, Duane Ericksen, Sisters-in-law, Theoda Karnitz, Mildrid Karnitz and Mary and Richard Kalmbach preceded Harold in death.
Harold’s family will receive friends on Tuesday July 24, 2018 from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Military rites conducted by the Gladstone American Legion Post #71 will follow at 12:00. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 1:00 pm at the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Wells with Rev. Fr. Eric Olson officiating. Burial will follow at the Gardens of Rest Cemetery in Wells. Luncheon will follow in the Fr. Parrotta Parish Hall.
