Gwendolyn “Gwenny” Rushford, age 81, of Rapid River went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, April 29, 2011 at the Elder Inn in Rapid River.
Gwendolyn was born July 27, 1929 in Armstrong Creek, Wisconsin, the daughter of Esty and Carrie (Breitzman) Gilland. She was raised in Rapid River and was a 1947 graduate of Rapid River High School. She was a longtime member of the Conregational Church in Rapid River and worked as a bookkeeper for the Rapid River Cheese Company for many years. Gwendolyn was united in marriage to Stanley Rushford on January 31, 1948 at the Congregational Church. She enjoyed playing cards with her friends at the Riverside Manor, socializing at the Omni Center and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is survived by her son Don (Kathy) Rushford of Chatham, MI, her grandchildren Patrick of Marquette, Daniel of Chatham and David (Emily) of Ishpeming, her great grandchildren Jake and Maddie, her sister Dolores (Don) Cousineau of Escanaba, MI and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Stanley, the love of her life; her son Michael, her parents, her step-father Thomas Fay, four brothers Carroll, Bernard, Vernon and Donald Gilland and her sister Eunice Wils.
Gwendolyn’s family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 4 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Congregational Church in Rapid River. Funeral services will follow at 6:00 PM with Pastor William Rafuse officiating. A luncheon will be served at the Rapid River Lions Club. Gwendolyn will be laid to rest in the Rapid River Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Gwendoyn’s name may be directed to the Congregational Church.
