Gregory “Koontzie” Koontz, age 70, of Cornell passed away on Sunday, June 4, 2017 at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor following a lengthy illness.

 

Gregory was born May 6, 1947 in Flint, MI the son of John D. and Barbara Jean (Davis) Koontz. He graduated from Manistique High School in 1965. Following high school he enlisted in the United States Army, serving his country proudly, and was a Vietnam War Veteran.Gregory was united in marriage to Charlene Lauscher on December 17, 1973 in Escanaba. He worked for many years with the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. He was a member of the VFW and was an avid Detroit Lions, NASCAR and Dale Jr. fan.He was known as the “Gaget Man” and enjoyed kayaking and spending time with his family, especially his grandson, Blake.

 

Gregory is survived by his wife, Charlene of Cornell, MI; sons, Jamie (Stacie) Lauscher of Anitgo, WI, Cori Harris of Green Bay, WI and Jason (Jennifer) Koontz of Dimondale, MI; daughter, Jodi (Kevin) LaCosse of Rock, MI; grandson, Blake Koontz;  sisters, Nancy (Peter) Denman of Gold Canyon, AZ and Jennifer (Matt) Cretens of Perkins, MI and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents.

 

The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 10 from 1:00 PM to 3:45 PM at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Military Honors will be presented at 3:45 PM by the Gladstone American Legion Post 71 and the US Army Honor Guard. Funeral services will follow at 4:00 PM at with Fr. Brian Gerber officiating. A luncheon will be served following the services at the St, Joseph Catholic Church in Perkins. Gregory will be laid to rest in the Gardens of Rest Cemetery in Wells.

    Greg was my brother all through High School. I can’t tell you how sorry I am at his passing.
