Gregory (Greg) Lynn Whiting, 57, died November 18 at his home after a short illness. Greg was born in Lansing, MI on March 12, 1949 to Clifford and Eleanor (Simons) Whiting. Greg served in the US Army for 3 years and then worked for the State of Michigan, Dept. of Info Technology until his retirement in 2002.
After retiring he moved to Rapid River. His hobbies included hunting, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. Greg was preceded in death by his parents. His survivors include his son, Eric (Christi) Whiting, his daughter Angela (Dan) Boyd, grandchildren, Isabelle, Ashton and Hannah Whiting, Dillon, Elizabeth and Morgan Boyd. Brothers Kendall (Jani) Whiting, Brian (Linda Brownell) Whiting and sister LuAnn (George) Berry. Numerous nieces and nephews.

I wish to express my condolences to Greg’s family in their loss. I worked with Greg for many years, and he was one of the last supervisors I worked for. He was also the best supervisor I had. I’m really going to miss him.

He was one great man. I worked with him for many years and he was always willing to help out with anything he could. And he was always the life of the party too. We sure poured back some beers on Friday’s at Gino’s after work. And there were a bunch of us that did that. May God bless you and may God rest his soul.

Eric & Angela, I was so saddened to hear about your father’s death, what a terrible loss for you and your children. Greg worked for me for several years at the Family Independence Agency. I was very happy for him when he was able to retire and I hoped he would be able to spend many many years fishing, hunting and most of all enjoying his grandchildren.
Angela, at the time he worked for me he kept us enthralled with the progress of your pregnancy and his trip out to see you. He was a very proud grandfather.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. I worked with Greg for quite a few years. One thing I will always remember about him is he was always willing to help out when needed. I’m one of the secretaries and when we worked in the Cass Building and we had to leave our desk he would always catch the phones for us, so when Secretaries day rolled around we bought him flowers for secretaries day and told him he made a “great secretary”. He will be greatly missed. He stayed in contact after his retirement and sent me pictures of the snow (and I always told him to keep it up there) and the deer. I’m so glad he got to spend his few years of retirement doing what he always wanted to do, fish and hunt. God Bless you Greg.

Greg and I were briefly engaged to be married many years ago. It just didn’t work for either one of us. However, there were no hard feelings and I often wondered how he was doing and how the children were. Greg was a hard worker and loved his parents, siblings and his children a great deal. I can only guess that having grandchildren was a great joy for him. He was a very good man and I’m sorry to find that he has been gone for some time. My condolences to his children, grandchildren and the rest of his immediate family.
