George R. Peterson, age 83, of Escanaba passed away peacefully at home on Friday, August 2, 2024 with his family at his side.
George was born on December 7, 1940 in Gary, Indiana, the son of Robert and Ethel (Richards) Peterson. He was a mechanic for American Airlines for many years. He enjoyed playing baseball for the Escanaba Cubs, traveling, making leather miniatures and loved to help people. He will be missed by all.
George is survived by his children Wanda Laufer, Mary Johnson, George Peterson Jr and Carmen Lehtola; step children, Ken, Steve and Theresa Brown; grandchildren, Brent Peterson, Rachel Cutter, Andrew Johnson, Troy and Brett Hansen, Tony Brown and Tonya Stansberry; numerous great grandchildren; siblings, Earl Peterson, Barbara Belongia Martineau, Linda Brunette, Tina Losleben and Tessie Peterson and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Peterson, his parents and his sisters, Sherry Lofquist and Carol “Susie” Putnam.
The family would like to thank the UP Health System Home Care and Hospice team.
George will be laid to rest on Friday, August 16 at 12:00 PM in the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Escanaba. A Celebration of George’s life will be held on Saturday, August 17 beginning at 4:00 PM at the Eagle’s Hall, 608 Ludington Street in Escanaba.

George when you came to San Diego to visit my mother she was thrilled you were there. She did not talk mush her last few years but when she smiled that was her. We are sorry we can’t make the funeral we have to be out of town for our granddaughters wedding. Our deepest sympathy goes to all his family…I have known George since we were younsters living in northtown and he was always very nice and fun to be around.
