George E. Jacobson, age 85, of 5356 Co. 513 T Road; Rapid River (Stonington area) died Sunday, January 21st, 2007, at the Elder Inn in the Maplewood area of Rapid River where he was a patient for the last month and a half.
George was born July 6th 1921 in Stonington, the son of Hugo and Ellen(Reinholdson) Jacobson and was a lifelong Stonington resident. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater and returned to Delta County after his honorable discharge. He married the former Gladys Leadman and together raised 3 children. Gladys preceded him in death in 1989.
In his early working years, George was employed as a school bus driver and he later sailed the Great Lakes. In addition to being engaged in farming in Stonington, he worked for the Rapid River Forest Service. At age 65, he retired from the KI Sawyer Air Force Base in Marquette County where he was the heating plant operator for many years.
George was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Stonington, the Stonington Booster Club, the Rapid River American Legion Walter W. Cole Post #301, and the Rapid River Senior Citizen Organization.
In his leisure, he enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and camping. George was also known by family and friends as being fond of playing the drums and the harmonica.
