Elizabeth M. Nelson, age 82, of 1123 Delta Avenue; Gladstone, died Monday, February 7, 2005 at St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba. She had been wonderfully cared for in recent times at LakeView Assisted Living in Gladstone.
Elizabeth was born September 2nd, 1922 in Gladstone, the daughter of John and Selma (Lindahl) Nelson and was a lifelong Gladstone resident.
After graduating from the Gladstone High School in 1939, she attended Augustana School of Nursing in Illinois and received her degree in nursing care in 1944. She was employed at Harper and Grace Hospital in Detroit for a brief period of time before beginning her employment at Bell Memorial Hospital in Ishpeming. Elizabeth subsequently relocated to Jamestown, New York and worked at the City Hospital before returning to Gladstone in 1947.
She became the supervisor of nursing at St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba and in 1950 Elizabeth began her long career as a school nurse for the Gladstone School System. She retired in 1984.
Elizabeth Nelson was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Gladstone and had been active in the Gladstone Senior Citizens for many years. She enjoyed her friends and family and was especially proud of her Swedish ancestry. In addition, she enjoyed her family home and had been quietly generous to numerous deserving people through the years.
Survivors include, several cousins, some of which are located in Sweden and by friends who were like family to Elizabeth.
She was preceded in death by her father, John Nelson, in 1959 and by her mother, Selma, in 1987.
Visitation and viewing for Elizabeth M. Nelson will be held on Thursday, February 24th at the First Lutheran Church from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Services celebrating her Elizabeth

To the family of Elizabeth Nelson:My name is Joan R. Anderson, and my father, Nels E. Nelson, was a first cousin to Elizabeth. Elizabeth’s father, John Nelson, was a brother of my grandfather, Nels Gustaf Nelson. I have lots of happy memories of being in Uncle John and Aunt Selma’s home as a child. They, of course, are Elizabeth’s parents. I moved away from Escanaba in 1952 when I entered Nursing School in Moline, IL. Three years later, I became married to Rev. J. Philemon Anderson. Our first parish was in St. Ignace and Brevort, MI and in 1964 we moved to Baraboo, WI where we served St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (ELCA) for 34 years, retiring in 1998. I have one brother, Richard Nelson and his wife, Lois, who live in Escanaba. Our parents are buried in the family lot in Fernwood Cemetery. Mother died in 1996 and Dad in 1981. I just thought it would be interesting to communicate with you via the Internet and send you our condolences. By the way, our Family Tree lists Elizabeth as being born on September 9, 1922. I see in your article that she was born on September 2nd. Perhaps our records are wrong.

I would like to express my sympathy in the loss of your loved one. I know she will be greatly misses. She was the school nurse during my high school years and was the leader of Future Nurses Club in school. I also used to clean house for her and her mother, Selma, about 25 years ago.
