Donald D. Helman, age 86, of 111 4th Avenue N., passed away Sunday February 12, 2012 at the Pinecrest Medical Care Facility in Powers.

Don was born July 13, 1925 in Gladstone the son of Charles and Johanna (Nelson) Helman. He was raised in Gladstone and attended Gladstone Public Schools.

Don served his country in the U.S. Navy during WW II. He was stationed on the battleship U.S.S. Pennsylvania. Upon his honorable discharge in 1946 he was awarded the U.S. Victory Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific (6 stars), Philippine Liberation (2 stars) and a Unit Commendation.

Don was united in marriage to the formal Carol Jean Popko on September 25, 1954 in Wisconsin. They made their home in Gladstone and Don worked for Harnischfeger Corporation until its closure in 1982.

Don was a member of First Lutheran Church in Gladstone and the Gladstone American Legion Post #71. He enjoyed spending time at his camp and working in his garden. His hobbies included hunting, fishing and working in the woods. His dog
