Clayton Joseph Schmidt, age 86, of Rapid River, died early Friday morning March 17, 2006 at the Christian Park Village Health Care Facility in Escanaba where he had been a patient since March of 2004.
Clayton was born January 23, 1920, in Grand Rapids, the son of Herbert and Alma (Weber) Schmidt. He was raised in Grawn, MI and attended and graduated from the local area school system. On September 20, 1941, Clayton married the former Ruth Schleif, in Grand Rapids. Shortly after their marriage, Clayton entered the United States Army Airforce serving as a navigator-pilot during WWII. Following the war, Clayton was honorably discharged and returned to Grand Rapids where he attained employment for the Packaging Corporation of America as a chief electrician. In 1972, Clayton and Ruth relocated to Rapid River. Clayton went to work and retired from the Mead Paper Corporation as a chief electrician. In addition to Clayton
