Carol Jean Johnson, age 88, of Gladstone, passed away August 15, 2020 at Bishop Noa Home in Escanaba with her loving family at her side. Carol was born October 12, 1931 in Escanaba and was the daughter of the late Joseph and Blanche Peltier. Carol attended St. Joseph High School where she graduated in 1949. On October 1, 1955, Carol was united in marriage to Roger E. Johnson of Gladstone at St. Anne’s Church in Escanaba. Their wedding was the first to take place in this new church.

Roger and Carol loved to travel. In 1980 they went to Germany and England to visit their son, who was in the Air Force stationed in Germany. They also spent many winters in Florida and later in Biloxi, Mississippi.

Carol spent many years in sales and management. She started her sales career at a young age. She worked at Sayklly’s Candy, the Red Owl stores in Escanaba and Gladstone, North Bay Wood and Arts in Escanaba where she taught painting and staining. She was also the manager at Advanced T.V. And Appliance. After she retired, she took a part time job at Oak Bluff Grocery in Gladstone.

In their 40’s, Carol and Roger took up Golf. They belonged to the Gladstone Golf Course for many years. When they sold their home on Montana Avenue, they moved into Oak Bluff Estates, which they were one of the original residents, and joined Irish Oaks Golf Course.

In her spare time, Carol enjoyed working with her husband, making and painting wood crafts, which they sold at many craft shows. She also enjoyed doing puzzles, needle point and was well known for her many afghans that she continued to crochet until she was no longer able, at the age of 85.

She has survived by her 5 children, daughters; Patti (Gary) Lippold, Lynne (Gerald) Hilling, Karen (Bill) DeMay, Lori (Michael) Rymkos, and by her son Michael (Kate) Johnson. Her 12 grandchildren; Doug (Jessica) Lippold, Joseph (Shelby) Lippold, Steven Lippold, Nicholas Hilling, Mathew (Linda) Hilling, Dr. Hayley (Shawn) Range, Paul (Emily) DeMay, Andrew (Bruce) Johnson, Alexandra (Nick) Schmaltz, Ashton Rymkos, Stacey Rymkos, and Michael Rymkos Jr. 10 great grandchildren, brother-in-law Jim (Iris) Johnson, many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Carol was preceded in death by her husband Roger, her parents Joseph and Blanche (Cabbilot) Peltier, her father and mother in law, Edwin and Beda (Swanson) Johnson, grandson Mitchell Hilling, great granddaughter Julia Schmaltz, sisters; Virginia (Clarence) Weber, Theresa (Clay) Holm, and Marcella Peltier, brothers; Bernard, Leonard (Elaine), and Chuck (Shirley) Peltier, brother in laws; Mason (Ida) Johnson, Fred (Vernice) Johnson, David Johnson, and sister in law Dolly (Joseph) Thibeault.

Mass of Christian Burial honoring Carol will be held on Thursday, August 20th, 2020 at 3:30 PM at All Saints Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Jamie Ziminski officiating. Carol will be laid to rest in the Fernwood Cemetery. The Johnson Family is being assisted by the Skradski Family Funeral Homes of Delta County.

    My condolences to the Johnson family. I first met Carol when I was a junior in high school and was hired to work at the Red Owl. I worked there till I went on to college. We reconnected when I started golfing at the Gladstone Golf Club. She and Roger were ‘good people.’ Rest in peace, Carol.
