Bryan S. Casteel

Resided in Escanaba, MI
Died June 19, 2021

Bryan S. Casteel, 52, of Escanaba, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, June 19, 2021. He was born on April 29, 1969, in Marquette, the son of Donald and Patricia (Bennett) Casteel. He was raised in Escanaba and Gladstone and graduated from Gladstone High School in 1987. Following graduation, he was employed for many years doing mechanical work – he loved all things motorized and was a gifted mechanic. Many people knew him as the person who could fix their car or snow plow when no one else could. His most beloved possession was the 1971 Mustang that he lovingly restored.

Bryan was a loving father, son, brother, and friend. He was kind and generous, always willing to help those in need. His struggles and triumphs with bipolar disorder in his adult life helped to destigmatize mental illness for all those around him, and he served others suffering from mental illness by always providing a listening ear and a cup of coffee at his kitchen table.

He is survived by his children Mitchell Kelly of Escanaba and Ashley (Billy) Buckman of Maricopa, Ariz.; grandchildren Xyllar and Harper Buckman of Maricopa, Ariz.; parents Donald and Patricia Casteel of Gladstone; sisters Pam (Bey) Brown and Cheryl (Neal) Crout of Gladstone, and Kristen (Jess) Davis of Atlanta, Ga.; brother Larry (Yvonne) Williams of Eau Claire, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews. Bryan was preceded in death by his grandparents Clarence and Mary Casteel and Edward and Edna Bennett, and his step-grandmother Viola Bennett.

Visitation will be held from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m., on Thursday, June 24, 2021, at First Lutheran Church, 1212 Minneapolis Avenue in Gladstone. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., followed by a luncheon.

I graduated from High School with Bryan and can definitely say he was one of the nicest guys in our class! Rest In Peace, Bryan! Gone far too soon!

This is such terrible news. I’m so upset that I wasn’t there for his funeral or as a friend the last so many years being involved in raising my own 3 children and a son with autism. Bryan was such an awesome person and I really enjoyed working on cars with him and cruising. He always talked so greatly about Larry and how proud he was of his brother. I had wanted to look him up this summer and see how he was doing but Unfortunately that time has passed and I’m very sad inside. I have such great memories of Bryan being such a nice and happy person and when he came down for the Green Bay fireworks he said it was the best fireworks he’s ever seen and I’m glad we spent that 4th together. I’m so glad he had two children. Everyone in the Casteel family are such great people and It spawns from his wonderful parents. My mom just told me this sad news yesterday and I’m still so shocked and can’t believe it. I’m so sorry for all of you losing Bryan it’s very heartbreaking. I hope he wasn’t in too much pain at the end. So sorry for not being there for you Larry, Pam, Don, Pat & Kristen. I’ll continue to say prayers for Bryan. I hope he’s cruising in his Mustang in heaven!
