Allen Kuula, age 67, of County Road 416, Escanaba, died Friday morning, April 16th, 2004, at the Iron Mountain Veterans Hospital.
He was born December 7, 1936, in Flint and resided in Delta County for a number of years. He is a veteran of the US Army serving from 1953 to 1959.
Upon his request, private services will be held at the convenience of the family. The Skradski Family Funeral Homes of Delta County are assisting the Kuula family.

As cranky as Al could be,I was always glad to see him and visit with him when he came to Drifters. I am very glad we had such a good visit the last time he was in. I only wish I could have said “Good Bye”.

Al was a great friend to me when I was commander of the Gladstone Post of the Michigan State Police from 1981 to 1988. We hunted together, and he taught me to bow-hunt the old-fashioned way that he called “instinct shooting.” No sights, no fancy equipment, but able to shoot in any conditions, from any position, in any direction. He was a friend and contemporary of the legendary celebrity bow hunter Fred Bear (listen to the song Fred Bear by Ted Nugent). Al was also an accomplished gunsmith and competitive pistol shooter. We practiced together, and he modified several handguns for me, helping me win many competitions. He was multi-talented, very intelligent, and could learn and do almost anything. He was an intelligence officer during the Korean War, and later worked as a railroad engineer (drove the train). He was forced into an early retirement due to a heart condition, so he moved to a cabin in the Upper Peninsula to live out the rest of his life, hunting, fishing, and being in nature. I think he lived longer than he expected to. There was much more to Al than most people realized. He was brave, honest, and trustworthy. If he was your friend, he would always have your back. I still miss the man, and a picture of he and I sits above my desk as I write this today. RIP Brother.
