Margit Viola Erickson

98 years old, of Gladstone, finally heard the words “well done, my good and faithful servant” on Thanksgiving morning November 26, 2020 and went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, surrounded by family. Margit always put Christ first, family and friends second, and herself last.

Margit was born July 18, 1922 and immigrated to Gladstone from Overmark, Finland at the age of two with her parents, John and Amanda Sigg and two older sisters who were born in the United States. She grew up and raised her four children in the Gladstone “Buckeye edition”.

She married Harry E. Erickson on August 3, 1948 and he preceded her in death in February of 2001.

Margit was a long-standing member of Bethel Free Church in Gladstone for many years where she was involved in Sunday School and women’s activities.

Mom was very devoted to her family and grandchildren. In earlier years, enjoying quality time with family, playing card games, board games and preparing homemade meals for everyone. She was a joy to be around and was always looking at life optimistically, enjoying the simpler things in life. She will be missed dearly by all who knew her.

Margit was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Kristine and son-in-law, Paul (Grandpa Camo) Gerard, and sisters Aili Demary, Sylvia Smith, and Erna Sigan and their husbands.

Margit is survived by the daughter of the late Kristine (Paul) Gerard, Rachael (Steve) Barnhart and family of Houghton, Michigan.

Her sons: Harry (Sue) Erickson and children: Andy (Jenny) Erickson and Jenny (Gordon) Erickson and their families all of Marquette, Michigan. Jerry (Rita) Erickson of Rapid River, Michigan and their children: Jamie (Heike) Erickson and family from Smithfield Virginia. Audree (Brandon) Orna and family of Castle Rock, Colorado. Kaylee (Marcus) Reynolds and family of Hillsdale, Michigan. Larry (Theresa) Erickson of Gladstone, Michigan and their children: Jason (Annie) Erickson and family of Perkins, MI. Ashley (Nick) Rye and family of Ishpeming, MI. Crystal (Rob) Branson of Maryland, and Josh Erickson of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Margit and husband Harry leave behind a legacy of ten grandchildren and twenty-five great grandchildren.

The family would also like to thank the Bishop Noa Home administration and staff for many years of outstanding care, along with Dr. Mary Whitmer and Kay Dault of Gladstone, her devoted senior companion.

Memorial contributions in Margit’s name may be directed to a charity of the donor’s choosing.

A memorial service honoring Margit will be held on Saturday, June 12, 2021, at 3:00 PM at Grace Church in Gladstone, with Pastor Scott Breault officiating.

I am so sorry to hear of Margit’s passing. She was a great lady and I had the wonderful pleasure of caring for her for 6 years while I worked at Bishop Noa Home. She will be so happy to finally be with her husband Harry and her daughter Kris again in heaven. She told me so much about them and she missed them greatly. Her family was absolutely everything to her. Margit was one of the most kind and thoughtful ladies I have ever met. I will never forget her. I truly loved her like she was my own grandmother.

I also had the pleasure of meeting Margit while working at Bishop Noa Home and knew her for 13 years. She was generous, kind, and a social butterfly. She would cruise around in her electric wheelchair visiting anyone she thought could use some friendly conversation. In all the years I knew her I cannot remember her ever uttering one cross word or being anything less than easygoing and optimistic. She loved talking about her huge family and I would joke with her about how she was the beginning of the Ericksons taking over the world. All the staff will miss her dearly.

    Harry and Sue,
So sorry for the loss of your Mother. I didn’t know her, but from reading the tributes of others, she was a very special person who brought joy to others.
You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.
    Dennis and Cheryl Stanek
