George A. Holmgren

George A. Holmgren, 96, of Ensign, passed away Saturday evening, December 9, 2017 at the St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba.

George was born February 22, 1921 in Ensign the son of Alfred and Emelia (Lindahl)Holmgren. He was raised in Ensign where he attended the Alton Schools. George served his country from 1942-1946 in the U.S. Army during WW II in the Central Burma Campaign. He was awarded the American Theater Service Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal. Upon his honorable discharge in 1946, George returned to Ensign.

George was united in marriage to the former Annabelle Kallerson on June 30, 1951 at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Rapid River. George built their current home in Ensign where they raised their three children. George was a self-employed carpenter all of his life.

George was a member of the Rapid River American Legion Post #301 and the Carpenters Union #1510. He loved hunting and spending time with his family.

Grandchildren: Kyle (Stephanie) Holmgren, Nicole (Chris) Zeman and Cody Bizeau

Great Grandchildren: Sophina Holmgren, Ava and Breanne Zeman

Godchildren: Kathy Rushford, Colleen Soderman and Andrew Johnson

In addition to his parents, his brother Arthur Holmgren and Godchild, Michael Johnson preceded George in death.

George’s family will receive friends on Thursday December 28, 2017 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Military rites conducted by the Rapid River American Legion Post #301 will follow at 4:00 pm. Luncheon will follow at the Calvary Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall in Rapid River. He will be laid to rest at the Rapid River Cemetery in Rapid River.

    Gods speed George. I am thankful to have known you. I will always remember the time me and my dad Gunnar spent in camp with you up in Stonington. Some of the best memories i have.

    My condolences to the family. Thank you George, for your service. Both in the armed forces and as a brother in local 1510. Proud to be a union brother and an Ensign neighbor. 96 yrs. Is a good long life. You must have done something right. Hugs to your family.

    First of all, my sincere condolences to the family. George built our family camp on corner lake back in 1971. My father and my grandpa always commented on the professional quality of work that George did. He was a top notch carpenter !!
