Gary and I have such fond memories of Shirley. Shirley’s mom and Gary’s dad were brother and sister. Gary remembers many trips to Gladstone in his youth with his parents, picking blueberries and collecting the iron ore along the tracks. Later on Gary and friends would come up to hunt and always visited with Dibbie and Gordy and there young brood and got to meet Frap who had marred Shirley. I didn’t meet Shirley until Gary and I were married in 1966. Uncle Pete Gordon was living there as well. We lost touch over the years and didn’t reconnect until Gary and I retired and I started doing genealogy. I called Shirley and the rest is history. Shirley and I had the best of times discussing the Gordon family. She was the one who knew the family so well thanks to her mother keeping in touch with so many cousins. She knew about the maternal Fogger side, as well as the Gordon side. She was familiar with the Gordon and Lincoln’s living in Indiana together. When Gary and I did our trips to Kentucky or Indiana for genealogy I always shared with pictures and stories about what we saw and learned. Every year we traveled to Gladstone or even Marquette this year when she was in the hospital. She always loved seeing our dog Ozzie too. We will miss her so much, she was a joy to share the genealogy journey with, she kept me on track with her questions and persistence. She has a special place in our hearts.

I did not have the pleasure of knowing Shirley, but what I do know is what a wonderful, kind and devoted son she raised. She must have indeed been very special herself. When ever I feel my patience with my own elderly mother is wearing thin, I think of how kind hearted Dan was to his mom and move forward. I know each and every one whose life she has touched deeply feels the loss, and you have my deepest sympathy.

I have many memories of Shirley, most of them because I practically grew up at her house. Melanie and I would play upstairs in the playroom and Shirley was always there letting us do whatever we wanted. She never yelled that I can remember, and she always let us stay up as long as we could on sleepovers. She made us breakfast in the morning and always had a smile. She was a truly wonderful lady. I as well as many others will miss her. My heart goes out to Melanie, Dan and all the rest of her family.
