Ethel Marie Nelson, age 88, of Gladstone, passed away Sunday morning August 9, 2015 at the Christian Park Health Care Center in Escanaba where she had been a patient for the past 4 days.

Ethel was born October 26, 1926 in Escanaba, MI the daughter of Clarence and Marie (Koep) Rose. She was raised in Escanaba where she was a 1944 graduate of Escanaba High School. Ethel was united in marriage to Delbert Nelson on August 10, 1946 and they made their home in Gladstone where they raise their four children. During this time she was active in Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and 4-H.

Delbert and Ethel enjoyed wintering in Texas where she taught English in the HELP Education Program. They also enjoyed traveling the United States and overseas.

Ethel was a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church in Gladstone, Rapid River American Legion Auxiliary Post #301, Gladstone Senior Center, R.S.V.P. after school program and a charter member of the 8 & 40. She was a past-member from 1946-present of the Gladstone American Legion Auxiliary Post #71 where she served as President, Vice President and Secretary. She also served as Secretary of the Bayview Manor 52 Club.

Ethel loved playing cards, dartball, and pool. She also enjoyed square dancing, hunting, fishing, camping and playing her ukulele. She was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and a former champion watermelon seed spitter.

Nancy Nelson of Masonville, MI
Reynold (Rita) Nelson of Bark River, MI

12 grandchildren:
Melissa Kulus, Ann Hammock, Heather Peterson, Danilyn McLaurin, Mindy Malenfant, Jennifer Blake, Tom Helman, Ashley Godfrey, Steve Cocorikis, Josh Nelson, Amanda Nelson and Samantha Nelson.

19 great grandchildren and 2 nieces and 2 nephews also survive.

In addition to her parents, her husband Delbert in 1986 and brothers, Raymond and Ralph Rose preceded Ethel in death.

    See you Wednesday. May God bless you and may your mom rest in peace now. It was fun visiting her in the hospital. Such a nice spirited woman and a great outlook. I only wish I could of known her for as long as Ive known her great daughter Nancy. Thanks for including me!
