2 Tributes for “Walter M. Morris

I remember Officer Morris from the time he pulled me over late at night when I was a teenager and he told me I had to be careful because of all the black people in the neighborhood.

My name is Jim Sedgewick. I worked with Walter Morris for several years at the Muskegon Police Department. Walt was one of the most kind hearted people I had the pleasure of knowing. Walt was a voluntary religious chaplain with the Police Department. In addition Walt was a brave officer. One call we were sent on was a domestic dispute. Before we could even step into the residence where the ongoing dispute was in progress another subject came up to us yelling his baby was dying. We found a new born baby on its back not breathing, and turning blue. The baby was on a oxygen pump attached to a stoma in the child’s throat. Walt quickly figured the oxygen line was kinked. Upon fixing the oxygen line the baby immediately began breathing on its own. Another call involved an armed subject threatening to commit suicide. Walt was not the responding officer. When Walt heard the call go out he voluntarily went to the scene, entered the residence by himself, and talked down the subject who was indeed armed with a handgun. These are just two examples of the professionalism Walter Morris put on display without ever receiving any accolades for over 20 years as a Police Officer. My life was enriched for knowing him.
