Susan Kay (Anderson) Johnson, 68, of 604 S. 11th St, Escanaba, passed away early Tuesday morning, July 28, 2015 following a lengthy Alzheimer battle.

Susan was born in Detroit, MI on November 9, 1946, daughter of Wallace and Ann (Vargo) Anderson. She graduated from Gladstone High School in 1964 and obtained a Bachelor Degree in Special Education from Western Michigan University. Sue did graduate work at University of Michigan, Wayne State University, Northern Michigan University and Central Michigan University where she continued to add to her teaching credentials.

Sue was an advocate for persons with special needs all of her life, beginning with her early work at Bay Cliff Health Camp starting as a dishwasher and later becoming counselor and reading instructor.

Sue began her teaching career in the Flint Public Schools as a Type A Special Education Classroom Teacher. In this position she was responsible for the programming of mentally and emotionally challenged children (K-6 grades). Later she moved to Big Bay de Noc Public Schools to develop their first Special Education Program. A truly caring person, Sue excelled as a Special Educator teacher when she began work in the Rapid River Schools, prior to becoming one of Escanaba

    I would like to extend my condolences to Don, JJ, Justin and Matt. I worked for them for 9 years and about 7 of those years was in the front porch of their home. So they were a very important part of my life during that time. Sue was a wonderful person and she will be missed. May she rest in peace!

    Sue was incredibly kind and always ready to share a smile, a laugh, and a word of encouragement. My deepest condolences to Don, JJ, Justin and Matt. May you find comfort and strength in your memories of the good times and the legacy of compassion and caring that Sue created during her life.

    Don and Family, So sorry to hear about Sue she was a great person and we sure enjoyed be around her she made everyone smile. Our thought and prayers go out to you. Paul and I are out of town this weekend and will not be able to attend the funeral you have our condolences.

    We have so many memories of our vacations in Florida with Sue and Don, Justin and JJ. Ivan remembers meeting Sue when they were 15 years old. We are so sorry for the loss of your wife and mother.

    Don and Family, I will so miss Andy. Even though we lived long distances from each other, our phone conversations picked up like they were yesterday. Betty Ann, Andy and I remained best buds from college at WMU. We have always been like the three musketeers. Andy’s friendship and love had such a positive impact on me.
