Harold F. Nehmer, age 101, of Gladstone passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba.
Harold was born January 20, 1913, in Big Rapids, Michigan, the son of Fred and Esther (Johnson) Nehmer, He was a graduate of Ferris State University. He served his country proudly in the United States Army during World War II achieving the rank of Sargent Major with the 86th Motor Battalion. He also took part in the liberation of the concentration camps in Buchenwald, Germany. He was honored to be able to go to Washington D.C. at the age of 100, and accompanied by his granddaughter Lacy, as a member of the Upper Peninsula Honor Flight. Harold was united in marriage to Ethel Tucker who preceded him in death on February 3, 2011. He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Gladstone where he served as President and Treasurer and the St. Martin Lutheran Church in Rapid River, was a district manager for Gamble Stores for many years and enjoyed golfing, fishing and playing cards. Harold was a devoted, loving and faithfilled, husband, father and grandfather and was greatly loved by his family.
He is survived by two daughters, Joanne (Mike) Lauzon of Escanaba and Susan Stade of Gladstone; four grandchildren, Lacy Lauzon of Escanaba, Jeff (Merissa) Lauzon of Milwaukee, WI, Scott (Rachael) Stade of Marquette and Amy Rickel of Green Bay, WI; five great grandchildren, Connor and Olivia Stade and Curtice, Ellison and Greyson Rickel; his sister, Betty LaForest of Newberry and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel, his parents, his brother Walter, four sisters, Rose Cloutier, Adeline Haner, Elaine Urbancic and Gertrude Rahilly, a granddaughter Tracy Jo Lauzon and a son-in-law, Scott Stade.
The family will receive friends on Friday, February 28 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Military Honors will be presented at 5:00 PM at the funeral home by the Gladstone American Legion August Mattson Post 71. Funeral services will be at 6:00 PM at the St. Martin Lutheran Church in Rapid River with Pastor Phil Paustian officiating. A luncheon will be served following the services at the church. Harold will be laid to rest in the Gardens of Rest Cemetery.
