Mark Edward Herrlinger, age 56, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 29, 2013 after courageously battling cancer, with his wife and family by his side.
Mark was born in Abington, Pennsylvania on February 20, 1957, the son of John Arthur and Shirle Elizabeth (Wilson) Herrlinger Sr. He later grew up in South Carolina and following graduation in 1976, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served as a Security Police Officer for 20 years in the United States, Germany, Egypt and England. Stateside, he served in Texas, Mississippi and eventually found himself in the Upper Peninsula where he would retire at K.I Sawyer AFB. Following his honored military career, he worked for Gordon Food Service Market Place in Marquette, where he received an “Employee of the Year” award, Bay City, MI and Escanaba, for nearly 14 years. His last seven years, he was the store manager.
Mark was active in the Lions Club, noontime Kiwanis and was a Past Commander of the American Legion in Marquette. He was also a board member with the Salvation Army, enjoyed reading, cooking and volunteering in his spare time. A military man at heart, he found great joy in serving and helping others. I am very honored to be Mark’s co-worker and friend for many years. We used to ride down to meetings together working for GFS. He was always there for advice and life’s answers for me. I will miss him. I am a better person for having Mark in my life.
