Charles Verner Hanson died July 21, 2005, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette where he had resided since 2003.
He was born Jan. 14, 1929, in the family home, 202 Schoolcraft Avenue, Manistique, the son of Charles A. and Nora (Jorgensen) Hansen. He attended Manistique schools and was a graduate of the Manistique High School Class of 1947. On July 13, 1957, he married the former Helen Wygal at Zion Lutheran Church in Manistique. She preceded him in death on Dec. 12, 1997.
Charlie was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving with the Army from 1950 to 1952. He earned the Korean Service Medal with Three Bronze Stars.
Charlie worked on the Great Lakes Steamship boats and with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers. In 1961, he moved to Port Huron and was employed with the E.B. Eddy Paper Company until retirement in 1991. After returning to the Upper Peninsula, he worked for the Northern Motor Company.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Gladstone, where he served as an usher.
Charlie was a collector of sports memorabilia and had a great knowledge of baseball, especially the New York Yankees.
Survivors include:
A son, Paul Joseph Hansen of Port Huron
A brother, Robert Hansen of Harlingen, Texas
A sister, Elsie (Gary) Klix of Birmingham, Mich.
Several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, the mother of his son, Helen Hansen; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Hansen.
At Charlie’s request, there will be no funeral services. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Manistique at the convenience of the family.
