I apologize for the delay in response…I had an email crash and lost the link to your site. The Greatest gift that my Grandfather Joseph G Hampton gave me was my mother! I will always be grateful for that.
I grew up in Alaska which is a long ways away from the UP, but my parents and grandparents traveled one way or the other, every other year, almost as though they had made a pact.
My Grandfather taught me so much in the time that we spent together. As a young boy, he taught me how to skin a perch. He taught me how to use a Lathe. He also, passed on his green thumb. In 1978, he helped my dad build a cabin in Alaska. I participated as much as possible and still utilize the carpentry skills he taught me today…”Measure twice, cut once” and “spike er’ down she aint no piano” were a couple of phrases that he regularly used.
The greatest memories I have with my Grandpa revolve around fishing. We fished in Michigan on the Perch River near L’anse and on Lake Michigan near his home. When we went to Michigan, he always made time to take us fishing! So,when he came to Alaska, I always made time to take him fishing! I remember countless times watching him wear himself out on 20+ pound salmon as I did the same! The memories are great and I have pictures to prove it.
In 1997 my wife and I had a daughter. In my Grandfather’s honor we named her Hampton. I’m so happy that he got to meet her in 1998.
Thanks for all the great memories Grandpa…We’ll miss you

My thoughts and prayers with the family of Joe Hampton. I remember him from the time I entered kindergarten in 1958 at South Range – through the eighth grade at Jeffers High School in Painesdale until we moved to Florida in 1967.
Joe Hampton was a community-minded and hard-working soul who made a difference. He put his heart and soul into his work and it showed.

Mary and I extend our sympathies to the entire Hampton family. In the many times I had the opportunity to be around Mr. Hampton, I found him to be one of the most warm, generous, and intelligent people I’ve ever met. He had a great sense of humor, an air of respectability, and a common sense approach to life that has been passed to his children. It seems to me that he led a life that brought joy to others, and continues to contribute to the betterment of the community around him through the entities that he developed, the children he touched through education, and his own children — and their children — who carry on his values. I think most of us would only hope to come close to accomplishing such things in our time on this planet.

I would like to send my deepest sympathy and gratitude to the Joe Hampton family. I really enjoyed working with Joe, as a Building Trades Instructior in Manistique for the DSISD. Joe was instrumental for hiring me for the job, and made me feel right at home, as I was hired without a B.S. Degree in teaching. He was really interested in my craftmanship and on-the -job skills that is so essential in voc-ed. I will always cherish the memories I have of working with him. I finished my B.S. Degree in 1977, and have written 2 practical math books since that time. I believe part of that accomplishment was due to his leadership and values. May God Bless you all.

My sympathy to the family members of Joe Hampton. Most of you maybe all of you do not know me but I had the opportunity to get to know Joe the last few months at the Christian Park Village where my father is also a resident. He and Joe ate at the same table. This past winter I had the opportunity of spending a light of suppers with my Dad and Joe. I could tell right away he was a wonderful person and wished that he and my Dad could have visited with each other when their memories were better. Joe often told me what a wonderful family he had. He always spoke very highly of his wife and mother and children. He always told me how he loved the teaching profession and all the students. I know he will be missed by all of you. I just wanted to let you know he was an inspiration to me these last few months and I am so glad I had a chance to get to know him

Jerry, Terry & family…
I remember visiting Joe and Beryl early in the time when I was your pastor. I was probably just one more in a long line of pastors they had known, but they opened their home to me, sharing family stories of raising sons in Painesdale etc. (there was one about a steep driveway & winter ice Jerry must remember.) I know that Joe will be deeply missed not only by your family, but also by this community ( and each town where he served). What a grand legacy! The pain of loss is real, but easier to bear when set in context of a life so exemplary and well-lived. Grace and Peace to you,

My condolences to your family with the loss of your father. He was the superintendent at Jeffers High School when I taught there in the early 60’s. ( I remember Terry very well. ) What a long, wonderful life he had and what he contributed to education is amazing.

Dear Terry, Tom, Pete, Jerry and All —
Please accept my deepest condolences on your Dad’s passing. It is difficult to look back on my life and not be reminded of Joe Hampton. When he came to Jeffers and your family moved to Painesdale, I had a whole new family in my life. I remember the many hours I spent at your house and all the things we shared–listening to records (the old 45’s), singing constantly, driving to Michigamme after the prom–just ordinary things, but always fun and very innocent.
I think that your family had as much influence on my life and career as my own family did. Your Mom and Dad were always available with open arms, open eyes, and open minds.
I could go on and on, but I really just want to say I am thankful that your Dad, Mom, and all of you were such a wonderful part of my life.
Thank you for being such a big part of my “growing-up” life. You are often in my thoughts, and will remain so especially in the coming days.
Lots of Love,

To the family of Joe Hampton,
Please accept my deepest sympathy in the loss of your loved one.
As an aide at Christian Park Village, I found Joe to be a pleasant and appreciative man. One of my first conversations with him was in regards to the Joe Hampton Award that is given out each year at the Delta-Schoolcraft ISD along with how strongly he felt about education for our youth. I will miss singing songs with him along with our interesting conversations while caring for him. His presence at the home will be missed.
Do hold on to all the wonderful memories that you have of Joe and know that one day you may share those memories with him. Until then, his love remains with you here on earth.
With Caring Thoughts and Prayers,
