Where to begin? I knew Frank my whole life and he was one of a kind. Larger than life with a wicked sense of humor and a genuine laugh you could feel. Hard to find the right words – he was just good. A man’s man with no time for wasted words – no one ever had to guess what Frank was thinking. Gina is one of my favorite humans on the planet and a lot of what makes her great came from her dad. My heart hurts for her and my honorary Aunt Ann. Love and hugs to you all.

Frank and I were best friends in high school in Iron Mountain. We went away to attend different universities and drifted apart. I stopped to visit him a few years ago at his store in Gladstone. He was a very good friend. May his memory be a blessing for his family.

Frank and I went to school together from grade school through high school and were next door neighbors on the North Side for all those years. I emailed Frank on occasion in the past years and talked about pizza, golf and Iron Mountain stuff…. always a laugh.

Frank and I were both Phi Kappa Tau brothers and 1970 EE graduates. Shared many EE classes together. Prior to our Senior year we took a trip to visit various opportuinites in EE and made a stop in Chicago. While there brother Carl Zaffe treated us to dinner and a show at the playboy club- quite the experience for a couple of wide eyed 21 year olds. I also remember spending many an hour on our snow statue for winter carnival when Frank was chairman. Good memories – rest in peace.

Very sorry Ann, and your family. Just the sight of Frank’s name dredges up many memories from ages ago. What good times from Colledge days! One of the best was 5 of us driving to Florida for spring break. May he rest in peace, he leaves me sad for his memory.

When I think of Frank, I think of someone who was larger than life. Sarcastic, to the point, and a straight shooter. I also think of him as having a tough exterior, but with a kind heart. He was someone you wanted to make proud.
Frank was a rock for me during one of the most difficult moments. I flew from Georgia to Chicago and rode with Ann and Frank to Gladstone to attend my Uncle and cousins’ funeral. We got to Skradski’s and I didn’t think I could go in. It was just too much. I was just standing outside the doors. Frank gave me a big Frank hug, took my hand, told me we would do it together and walked into the funeral home with me hand in hand. I will never forget that moment.
Frank will be missed by so many. My deepest condolences to Ann, Gina, Joe, and their families.

I didn’t know Frank for very long–just over a few years. That said, I enjoyed the times that we got to spend together: pasta dinners at the dining room table, the Game Show Network and Discovery Channel on the TV, Christmas and birthday celebrations in Gladstone and Marquette.
Most of all, the times that I enjoyed with Frank were the brief times spent between just the two of us. A man of few words, I will always remember him as a straight shooter. He never held back–if he had something to say, he would say it, even if you were in the middle of your own sentence. He was also funny with a witty and sarcastic brand of humor–my favorite. Every once in a while, I’d get him to laugh, which was always great. Seeing his eyes squint behind his glasses and his smile light up was a gift–one that I am grateful to have received.
In my short time with him, I also got to know Frank as an observant and inquisitive man. Every time Regina and I would arrive at the house, he would be tinkering with something, trying to re-engineer an existing design, or demonstrating the wisdom of his original design–typically a tool that he fashioned out of household wares. Wouldn’t you know it, they usually worked. His engineering mind was sharp to the very end.
Lastly, I will remember Frank as a sensitive and loving man. Some may disagree with this assessment; however, I got to witness it first hand on multiple occasions. He had a special affinity for his daughter and granddaughters. Whether it was a Diet Mountain Dew or some variety of gummy candy, Frank always figured a way to lure his girls in for a hug and a kiss–his engineering mind was relentless.
In the end, I will always be grateful for Frank. Although he has taken up eternal residence elsewhere, his spirit remains here within the hearts of those he loved most–truly a gift that keeps giving.
