Steven J. Shope, 52, of Rapid River, passed away on December 2, 2022 at Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids following a heart transplant.

Steven was born on August 12, 1970 in Escanaba, Michigan, to William F. Shope, Jr., and Mary (Howard) Shope.  Steven graduated from Mid Pen Schools in 1989.  Following graduation he worked many jobs until he found the career that was meant for him.  He was a CNA at Christian Park Center for over ten years.  He will fondly be remembered by all of the residents and staff who had the privilege of working with him and who called him friend.  He was so kind and generous to everyone he knew and he had a sense of humor that will never be forgotten.

Steven’s greatest joy in life were his children. He made sure their childhoods were filled with activities, joy and above all, love!.  There is nothing he wouldn’t do for them.  He wanted to spend all of his time with them, especially throughout his courageous battle following his heart transplant.

He was an avid Detroit Lion’s and Detroit Redwings fan.

Steven is survived by his mother, Mary Broeders (Ron Bricker) of Rapid River; his five children, Ashley Shope (of Craig, Colorado), Kayleigh Shope (Escanaba), William Shope (of Escanaba), and Samuel Shope and Rhiannon Shope (both of Rapid River).  He is also survived by his brothers, Tim (Lori) Shope, Casey (Kayla) Shope and Dusty (Lindsay) Shope ad his sister, Misty (Ryan) Gutleber.

His survivors also include his two granddaughters, Isabelle Hayes and Shailei Preston of Craig Colorado, his grandmother, Darlene Shope and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, William F. Shope, Jr., his paternal grandfather, William F. Shope, Sr., his maternal grandparents, Harry and Mary Howard and his son, Jacob Steven  Shope.

Family will receive friends on Saturday, December 10, 2022 between 11:00 and 2:00 p.m. at Skradski Funeral Homes, Gladstone, Michigan.  A memorial service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the Skradski Funeral Home in G;adstone.     I am so very sorry to see this, Steve and I go back 41 years…. May GOD bless his family with peace and comfort during this difficult time, He may be gone, but Steve’s presence here will be remembered forever! Rest in Peace my friend!

    The memories are priceless and I will never forget! All the fun times during high school, our first bus trip to a Red Wings game… the great times just hanging out…as we grew older ,. seeing the joy in your face when you talk about your kids… we grew apart over the years but you hold a special place in my heart forever ❤️

    So sorry to hear of Steve’s passing. I know all he wanted was to be able to play with his children and go back to work. He was a very sweet helpful soul. Condolences to the entire family.

    Steven was a kind soul who shined a light in our community, he will be deeply missed. I will forever be glad knowing him.

    Steve was always so friendly and helpful to my nursing students at CPC, he made them feel comfortable learning and he was so kind to the residents, so sorry to hear of his passing, thinking of his family.

    I remember Steve being a great athlete, strong and the girls chasing behind him,he had a positive vibe and always friendly for a strong guy that could have pushed his weight around if he wanted to,God Bless!

    Steve was just a beautiful soul! His love for his kids was amazing!! I remember coaching little league with him, he was absolutely the best coach!! Some wonderful memories. My deepest condolences to the family. Rest In Peace my friend!

    I am so very sorry to hear of Steve’s passing. I was one of the staff members privileged enough to work with Steve, he always had a smile and a joke to share. He was such a special person and made everyone around him feel as such. Rest in peace, my friend.

    I knew Steve from high school, hung out with him a few times. Im very sorry to hear of his passing, prayers for his family.

    I got to know Steve at Christian Park. He was the best care giver and I really thought a lot of him! I’m truly sorry to hear this. My condolences to his family.

    Steve was such a great guy!! We go way back and we were locker buddies for years. He always knew how to make you laugh…. or jump in fear!! Lol
    Steve found out my fear of spiders and would go out of his way to try to scare me!! We would just laugh all the time. He was still picking on me when I would go see my Aunt at Christian Park! I loved it and so did he!! He will be greatly missed by so many!! Rest In Paradise my sweet friend! ❤️
