Sharon (Godfrey) Nadeau

Resided in Brampton, MI
Died June 16, 2018

Sharon (Godfrey) Nadeau, of Gladstone, died at her home Saturday, June 16 with her family at her side. She was 73.

Sharon was one of eight children born to Walter and Thelma (Froberg) Godfrey of Gladstone. She grew up in Gladstone’s East End neighborhood, where generations of Godfrey kin have lived for more than a century. Sharon never lost her connection to her beloved hometown or it’s people.

She may be best remembered as a person who truly loved people and seemingly knew just about everyone in town, who they married, their kids names, or where they worked. She was very outgoing and had a sharp sense of humor which never faded, not even during the final days of her illness.

Sharon loved meeting new friends and visiting with old friends and relatives. As anyone who’s ever run into her at Super Valu knows, she truly enjoyed chatting with anyone and everyone she encountered in her activities around town.

When Sharon was just 16, she met a young man who would forever change her life: Eugene “Phil” Nadeau of Nahma. Sharon knew right away that she would marry the young serviceman, in town on leave from the US Coast Guard. They married in 1964, and Sharon began the life of a devoted military spouse, which would for a while take her far away from her hometown. The couple raised two children, Phillip and Andrea.

Over the remainder of her husband’s 20-year military career, the family was stationed in Munising, Escanaba, Superior WI, Alameda CA, Treasure Island CA, Novato CA, and Selfridge ANG base near Detroit.

After her husband’s military retirement in 1979, Sharon and her family returned home to Delta County. Sharon worked as an aide in an area nursing home while her husband repaired automobiles. The couple then went into business for themselves, opening “Phil’s Auto Repair” in Gladstone, which they owned for 20 years until 2006.

Sharon loved and adored her grandchildren, Austin and Justin, and her many nieces and nephews. She enjoyed reading mystery novels, and stories about faith and God. Her hobbies included singing, painting, doing crossword and word search puzzles, sudoku, watching scary movies and her favorite daily soap opera. Sharon enjoyed Gospel music, country music, and polka music. She especially loved Elvis.

Sharon’s affinity for conversation, her unfiltered sense of humor, and her enthusiastic love and affection for her family and friends will be greatly missed.
She had a loving and compassionate heart, and practiced kindness and charity toward strangers and friends alike. Sharon was often seen comforting those who were grieving or going through difficult times.

Sharon was preceded in death by her parents Walter and Thelma; her brothers Wallace, Walter, and Mark; her sisters Shirley, Darlene, and Betty Lou; and her beloved nephew Christopher Trottier.

She is survived by her husband Eugene, son Phillip, daughter Andrea (Kevin), grandchildren Austin Azbell, Justin (Shay) Azbell, sisters Michelle (David) Trottier and Catherine “Mazie” Godfrey, aunt and dear friend Evelyn (Mike) Birkholz, niece Caitlin Trottier, grand-nephew Gatlin Gudwer, dear friend Lois Gerou, many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 21, from 4:00- 6:00 pm at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Funeral services will follow visiting hours at 6:00pm at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone.
Sharon will be laid to rest in Fernwood Cemetery.
The Skradski Family Funeral Homes of Delta County are assisting the Nadeau family.

To Sharon’s family, I am so sorry for your loss. This is a loss for the entire community. I don’t remember a time I didn’t know Sharon. It’s been years sometimes between visits, but every visit was always a joy. Praying for the repose of Sharon’s soul and comfort for her loved ones.

So sorry for your loss. She was a wonderful lady with a great sense of humor. I don’t think I ever saw her without a smile on her face. Prayers for comfort and peace for the family.

I can’t remember a time that Sharon didn’t greet me, hug me, or “pick on” me. She always went out of her way to show me kindness. If there was a wedding, church gathering and function, funeral, or any activity that she knew about, she was there. We all just accepted her as a part of the family and community. Since my injury, I haven’t been around or out and about much; I didn’t get to see Sharon before she passed. I only just heard of her illness the beginning of this month. But to the family, my heart is with you, my prayers are for you, and I loved Sharon deeply. Phil, God bless you and your memories of years past, and I will continue to pray for God’s never-failing peace.
