Mitch Michael Collins, 30, of Gladstone passed away peacefully while sleeping Friday morning June 22, 2018 at home.
Mitch was born June 2, 1988 in Escanaba the son of Bruce and Cindy (O’Connell) Collins. He was raised in Gladstone and graduated from Gladstone High School. In true Mitch fashion he graduated with a flare. He was in the Madison Children’s hospital recovering from emergency gall bladder surgery and participated in graduation over the phone. Following graduation Mitch enjoyed volunteering at a local pet store. Mitch enjoyed animals and had rats, fish, hermit crabs and cats for pets over the years. He participated in MDA camp for 13 summers and made many lasting friendships including his close friends Josh Dodge and Tony VanAsten. Mitch also enjoyed participating in the MDA telethon for many years, and he served as Goodwill Ambassador one year. Mitch was fortunate to have siblings quite a bit older than him. He got to experience college life at the ripe old age of 10 years old. Mitch loved his weekends spent in their apartment in Marquette and enjoyed good food from The Pasta Shop and lots of video games. In high school Mitch was provided the opportunity to go on a hunt through the Buck Masters and he shot an 8 point buck who was mounted and graced the wall of his bedroom. Throughout his life Mitch loved traveling with his traveling partners, his mom and Grandma Mary. Their adventures included Disney World 4 years in a row, a 10 day cruise to the Dominican Republic, Las Vegas on his 21st birthday, yearly birthday trips to visit his buddies in Madison, and many trips to Milwaukee.
Mitch enjoyed computers. He watched YouTube videos on a wide variety of topics because he enjoyed learning. Mitch even was able to talk his mom through removing the van battery, cleaning the connections and replace it without ever having seen under the hood. Mitch was tech saavy and fixed his parents computer for them via networking. He also enjoyed cooking and was quite knowledgeable from watching many cooking shows. He used skype to join in the kitchen and give pointers to his mom. Mitch appreciated good food and always enjoyed when his buddy, Nick, would make dishes Mitch had told him about. Mitch spent many hours a day playing video games and would play online with his friends James and Josh. He cherished his days playing video games and watching movies with his cousin Taylor, cousin Heather, and friend Fred. Mitch’s heart was so full whenever any of his cousins spent time with him.

Paternal grandmother: Eileen Collins of Gladstone

Maternal grandfather: Harold “Spike” O’Connell of Gladstone

Aunts and Uncles: Kathi and Fred Hoehn of Escanaba, Ray and Bonnie Collins of Escanaba, Cheryl and Steve Corden of Rapid River and Mike O’Connell of Escanaba

Special friend: Nick Summers of Escanaba

Many cousins also survive

Maternal grandmother, Mary O’Connell, brother, Jerry Collins, nephew, Cameron Delveaux and uncle, Pat O’Connell preceded Mitch in death.

Mitch’s family will receive friends on Tuesday June 26, 2018 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at the Grace Church in Gladstone. Funeral services celebrating the life of Mitch Michael Collins will follow at 5:00 pm with Pastor Jason Kent of the Grace Church officiating. Luncheon will follow at the Grace Church Fellowship Hall in Gladstone. Mitch will be laid to rest at the Fernwood Cemetery in Gladstone.

    Dear Bruce, Cindy, Jen and family. Mitch was a student of mine who made me a better therapist and person. He challenged me and would often say “I have a better idea! Let’s do it this way”. I loved his personality and way with people. As parents and siblings you were also an inspiration, allowing Mitch to fail when appropriate, but always there to support him.     Bruce & Cindy, I am so sorry for your loss. Bonnie & I were just talking that we didn’t get to meet Mitch. We could tell by the way you talked about him on how proud you were If him. May he Rest In Peace & run with the angels.

    To the Family of Mitch Collins, It was a joy to be a part of Mitch’s educational program at Gladstone High School. He was a great inspiration to our students and faculty. I am so glad we connnected to announce his diploma on graduation day! Our thoughts and prays are with your family.

    We were so sorry to hear about Mitch’s passing. He always amazed me with his positive attitude and exuberant spirit. My fondest memory of Mitch is when we had that “little” mishap with the fireworks on 4th of July and Mitch thought it was “Awesome”. It still makes me giggle when I think of that. I hope all the memories you made as a family will sustain and comfort you in the days and years to come.

    So sorry to hear of Mitch’s passing. I have many memories of him during his middle school years. Like many of that age, he always enjoyed practical jokes. I am happy to read that he was able to enjoy many more years of travels and fun with family and friends. May you find comfort in your memories and may God grant you His peace in the difficult days ahead.
