Mary Jo Norkooli, 61, of Gladstone, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Mercy Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Rapids on Dec. 24, 2018 following a brief battle with AL Cardiac Amyloidosis.

Mary Jo was born March 2, 1957 in Escanaba, MI, the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Little) Nault. She attended Escanaba Area Schools and graduated in the class of 1975.

She worked for many years at Holy Name Catholic School and for the Gladstone Area Schools.

Mary Jo had a passion for cooking and baking and was an amazing painter. She enjoyed her Diet Pepsi (we apologize for any layoffs at Pepsi due to the decline in sales now), daytime dates with Dr. Phil followed by laughs with Ellen Degeneres, Friday night fish fry’s, late nights at the casino and joy rides with her husband in their ’56 Chevy. Mary Jo loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and was so excited to meet her new granddaughter, Baylee, due in February.

Mary Jo married her loving husband on May 18th, 2002 at their home in Gladstone.

Among survivors include her mother, Mary Nault of Escanaba; husband, John Norkooli of Gladstone; brothers Jeff (Patty) Nault of Neenah, WI and Patrick (Elizabeth) Nault of Hanahan, SC; children Christopher (Dawn) Hess of Ishpeming, Andrew Hess of Gladstone, Jennifer (Josh) Brazeau of Gladstone, her “favorite” son, Daniel (Kryssy) Hess of San Francisco, CA; stepdaughters Kelly Norkooli of Escanaba and Stephanie (Jake) Couchene of Marquette; grandchildren, Kayla (Curtis) Boudreau, Cassidy Leach, Quenten Derwin, Dakota Clark, MacKenzie Brazeau, Haylee Brazeau; three great-grandchildren Hunter, Brantley and Nora; her best friends Lisa and Cindy, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mary Jo is preceded in death by her father Thomas and brother Tim.

Family will receive friends Saturday, January 5, 2018 from 10:00 until 1:00 PM at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Funeral services will follow visiting hours at 1:00 PM at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone with Rev. Fr. Rick Courier officiating. A luncheon will follow at the Gladstone Senior Center. The Skradski Family Funeral Homes of Delta County are assisting the Norkooli family.

    I was so sad to hear the news of Mary Jo’s passing. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to John and family. I have very good memories of carrying her around on my hip when she was a baby. She will be missed.

    I am so sorry for your loss. Mary Jo was a wonderful person. She will be missed. Let god wrap his arms around this family to help them thru this difficult time.

    It breaks my heart that you lost her, John. Way to young and she was so nice. She’s been a part of our family for 40+years. My thoughts and prayers are with you always.

    I’m going to miss my mom like crazy. She was an amazing person and the best grandma to my girls. I don’t know what I’m going to do without her. 🙁

    To John, my Aunt Mary, her brothers Jeff, Patrick Nault, and all of MaryJo’s children I am so sadden with the loss of your special lady MaryJo! I loved her and looked up to her so much cuz of her great fun loving personality. I don’t think I ever saw her when she wasn’t smiling and joking with everyone around her. She was one of my extra special cousins growing up with that always made your heart feel better when she was around. Love to each and everyone of you!

    Life has changed for so many with the loss of a fantastic daughter, wife, mom, grandma, sister and best friend. My thoughts are with you everyday, and I pray to see you again someday. You are very much loved and will be missed by many. Rest in Peace my friend. Until we meet again.

    God has now a precious and loving aunt, the one we have lost. Your company will even regale angels of death and make them smile.

    I’m sure going to miss my Mother-in-law . She was such an amazing person and an even better Grandma to our girls. She will be missed by everyone that got the pleasure to know her.

    I have fond memories of my fun cousin Mary Jo. We would go years between seeing or talking to each other; and then when we got together, it was like no time had passed. We could easily just talk and have fun again, like when we were kids. I admired her and love her still. My heart goes out to all those who she shared her love with regularly, as I know she will be greatly missed. She has a solid, cherished place in my heart. RIP Mary Jo.

    I sure am going to miss you, your beautiful smile , your laugh, your very kind heart you were wonderful with our beautiful granddaughters MacKenzie and Haylee bug I promise we will keep your memory with us and I will be the best mother in law to Jenny.
